What have any of those teams done to make themselves better? I'm pretty sure none of them are any better then last year.

You were also "pretty sure" the Cubs wouldn't sniff the playoffs numerous times during the last two seasons. Just sayin'.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

The Reds and Pirates are better because their young talent is developing -- not because they made any awesome acquisitions.
The Cards' bullpen was responsible for a whole lot of blown saves last season. If TLR figures that out and if Carpenter can make 20 starts (I know -- big if), then they're also better.
Of course, in your guys' minds, all of the bad stuff we've seen from the Cubs so far is temporary -- as is all of the good stuff we've seen from our NL Central rivals.

The Reds are still are a year or 2 away with their young talent to compete for the division. I'm not even going to take your stance on the Pirates seriously. Milwaukee isn't going to come close to competing with us, Although the Astros could be decent, I'm not really worried about them at all.
The Cardinals have a TERRIBLE bullpen. Fucking terrible. LaRussa can't figure something out if he doesn't have pitchers that can pitch. Carpenter is out until I believe June so there's that. If he makes 20 starts then fine, but I'm not really worried about Loshe, Wainwright or Wellemeyer.
Dude you seriously need to calm down. It's 18 games and we're 9-9. We still have the wild card.

If you aren't worried about Wainwright, then you haven't seen him pitch or looked at his stats.

So the Cardinals are better then us because Wainwrights been pitching well, Carpenter *might* make 20 starts this year and they have about the worst pen in baseball? Oh wait they do have Colby Rasmus that young buck.
I really don't know how you're worried about them Butch. The only 3 players on that team that scare me are Pujols, Ludwick, and Carpenter (if healthy). That's it.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Reds placed third baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the 15-day disabled list with a crip fracture in his wrist.
Jerry Hairston Jr. is playing third base tonight, but the Reds should use this excuse to give Adam Rosales a look at the position. Encarnacion hasn't hit at all this season and he's a liability on defense, so the injury will help the Reds for the short-term. They will need Encarnacion's bat for the long haul, though. I'd trade Wainwright for any starting pitcher on our team -- no question, straight up. Pujols is the best hitter on the planet. Ludwick has shown that he's for real. Carpenter is better than Wainwright when he's healthy. All the rest of their team are role players, to some degree, but there is some talent there. Molina is one of the best defensive catchers in the league, if not the best. LaRussa seems to be figuring out his bullpen, and while there are some holes, our bullpen certainly isn't any better.

I think Wainwright's terrific, but I'll still take the pitcher who has thrown 200 innings in 5 of the last 6 years, has an ERA under 4 in all 6 of those years, and has at least 13 wins all of those years, at least 14 in 5 of them. He's also younger.

In 2009? Yes, you're right.
He started 20 games in 2008 and went 11-3 with a 3.20 ERA. He was 14-12 with a 3.70 ERA the year before that.
You've seen him pitch, right? His stuff is filthy.

Butch....what about our rotation is showing cracks? What are they doing any differently than they have ever done? Lilly getting off to a bad start this year...that is a shocker!! Oh wait, he did the exact same thing last year. Zambrano has been somewhat erratic...color me shocked! Harden is pitching pretty damn good, again, a shocker. Dempster and Marshall have been serviceable.
However, I can totally see how you are able to make assumptions and potential doomsday projections based on 18 games of the season. Might as well just give the division to the Cards now because they are obviously the best team in the division for the year because they are in the lead.

I don't know if salary is a factor in the decision, but Wainwright makes $600K. Z makes $16M.
