I'd say they're slightly better than "decent or outright average," as a group.

tom brunansky and troy glaus are on that list. maris was a three year wonder. strawberry was vastly overrated.

willie hernandez won an mvp. stew on that for a while.

Brunansky and Glaus are/were very good players...definitely MUCH better than decent or average. And they're the two worst players of the 10 people on the list. The other 8 were all great stars.
Strawberry was not remotely overrated. He was an absolute superstar until he became a hard-core cocaine addict, mid-career.
Maris won 2 MVP awards, won rings with two different organizations, and broke the greatest record in sports. There have been worse careers.

Aside from Bonds, the rest of those players weren't even the best players on their own team either, just sayin'.

Which means absolutely zero. Lou Gehrig wasn't the best player on his team. Neither was Johnny Bench, Nolan Ryan, or Steve Carlton.
What was your point?

My point is that they weren't the best players on their own team. In fact, some of those guys played on teams where they weren;t in the top 5 on their team. Very few of those listed were make or break type players, they were good, nice role players, not much more.

Yessir, solid point. Six of the ten guys won MVP awards. Two of them are in the Hall of Fame. One of them is in the "greatest player of all-time" argument.
Yessir, role players.

I can not wait for the day Adam Dunn is elected to the HOF, it'll be glorious.

There is no doubt that he will get some votes:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/assess...p;goalTotal=500

highlight (for tom)QUOTE Based on Dunn's age, he should finish at 565 HR for his career. He has a 80.2 percent chance to reach 500 HR.

565 home runs? I can see that garnering a HOF vote or two.

Are there any players who have hit more than 500 HRs who aren't in the HOF (if you take out steroid controversy issues)?

Honest question.

nope. kingman, canseco, and mcgriff would have been the first 3, but all came a tad short.

1 Barry Bonds 762
2 Hank Aaron 755
3 Babe Ruth 714
4 Willie Mays 660
5 Ken Griffey, Jr. 613
6 Sammy Sosa 609
7 Frank Robinson 586
8 Mark McGwire 583
9 Harmon Killebrew 573
10 Rafael Palmeiro 569
11 Reggie Jackson 563
12 Alex Rodriguez 553
13 Mike Schmidt 548
14 Jim Thome (4) 545
15 Mickey Mantle 536
16 Jimmie Foxx 534
17 Manny Ramírez 533
18 Willie McCovey 521
Frank Thomas 521
Ted Williams 521
21 Ernie Banks 512
Eddie Mathews 512
23 Mel Ott 511
24 Eddie Murray 504
25 Gary Sheffield 500

If Dunn hits 565 HR, that will put him ahead of Jackson, Schmidt, Mantle, Foxx, McCovey, Ted Williams, Ernie Banks, etc., etc.

He'll get plenty of votes if he meets that milestone -- as he should.

No. I think Palmeiro and McGwire are the only retired players with 500+ HRs not in the Hall. I don't think Bonds, Frank Thomas, or Sosa are technically retired yet.

Active players with 500 are Manny, A-Rod, Thome, Sheffield, and Griffey.

If you take out steroids or other banishments, there are no players with 500 homers, 3,000 hits, or 300 wins who are not in the Hall. Ever.
