Soriano is awful
<!--quoteo(post=59716:date=Aug 24 2009, 11:46 AM:name=Vine)-->QUOTE (Vine @ Aug 24 2009, 11:46 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->Sometimes it seems that the players are going through the motions. How much time does each batter take to "study" an opposing pitcher before each game or even series? Are they basically briefed of tendencies right before the game or merely an hour prior? Situational hitting is pretty darn bad this year and I think Lou should take 50% of the blame. Are scouting reports really that difficult to understand? I wonder if they're written in spanish as well, because Soriano and Soto look like a couple of idiots this year.

In all seriousness, I don't think you can blame Hendry for a lot of this at all. How many times has someone said, "on paper, this team should be kicking ass"? I agree, it should be. Injuries? Sure. Lack of motivation by our manager? Probably. In game managing? Pretty much a joke imo.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
But that's my point. I don't really think that "this team should be kicking ass on paper". I mean maybe if we were playing all our games in Arlington, and it was 3 years ago or something...

That is the most likely choice. Either Marshall of Gorzelanny will need to replace Harden.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That and adding a decent SS and maybe 1 setup man is all I am honestly expecting from out front office. I'd like to see drastic changes to our team up the middle, but that isn't realistic.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Getting rid of Lou wouldn't hurt too.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

What exactly has Lou done wrong here? I never hear an actual reason for everyone wanting to fire him. I will occasionally hear about how he wanted to have the extra left handed bat, but that's not what fucked the Cubs this season.

More simply put, what would a different manager provide to this team that Lou doesn't? Or what would said manager do better?

I feel like people want change for the sake of change. Anyone else think it's crazy?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

yes

I don't think Lou's to blame for this season, but I think he's more to blame than Hendry. Hendry put a team on the field that is substantially similar to last year's team that had the best record in the National League. To the extent that they did not perform up to expectations, I think that's more on Lou than Hendry, since Lou is the one who's supposed to make sure they do perform.

That being said, I don't think it's Lou's fault -- certainly not to the degree that he should lose his job.

I never get this shit....what's he supposed to do if they suck? Threaten to kill their families if they don't start hitting?

That point is totally valid. However, we can all get behind the idea that if multiple players underperform, it's more on the manager, who is supposedly in charge of what happens on the field, than the general manager, right?

We could always get a manager like Ozzie Guillen who's players want to play for him like Tom Berringer's guys wanted to fight for him. Better to be under a bully's wing than in his sights.

In most cases I would disagree, but when you see an entire clubhouse full of lifeless players and underachievers and the manager appears to offer no answers, constantly looks exasperated and at a loss for words, it just might be best for everyone to make a change. Then again, I doubt that with all the injuries and other issues at play this season, that anyone could have made this team into champions.

Well, that's what I was trying to say though. I don't think they are underperforming nearly as much as some people do.

Rok, I understand what your saying and agree that maybe no one single player could come in and turn it around. However, given the fact that there are about 6 guys who have underachieved this season, Lou's definitely the scapegoat. Will he be fired? I seriously doubt it due to the injury bug, new ownership, his contract, etc.

When I watch this team, it just boggles my mind that someone like Soriano and Bradley could be so awful. During August, Soriano could be the worst player in ALL of baseball. That is pathetic and all Lou does is scratch his chin, look down, shake his head and play Sam Friggin Fuld. Every single game, my wife says "are Jeff Baker, Jake Fox and Sam Fuld the best hitters on the team now?" I say, "outside of D. Lee, right now, yes." WOW.

Do you guys think there is something to the poll of "which manager would you least like to play for?". Maybe Lou doesn't have the all the players behind him. Right or wrong it is easier to try and change the manager than 5-6 players.
A couple things that he has done that have me thinking he has lost it are 1)the philly game were he let Marmol load the bases on walks and then walk in a run against a lefty when Grabow was ready. Next lefty Grabow k's on 3 pitches we lose by 1. 2) when he walked out to change pitchers only nobody was warming up.

Theriot is not a very smart player. You would think a guy that gets by on the small things in the game would have a high IQ. Example: Even though the play was called dead he throws the ball home after it drops. We were up 2 he had an easy force out at second, but he throws home and had no chance even if the play would have counted. The grounder to his right with runners on 1st and 2nd he throws across his body and luckly gets a break on a bad call by the umpire. Why would he not take the lead runner as he is going to second? SS should be looked at in the offseason.

You have a good manager for when players/things are not going well. Lots of people can manage when everyone is playing well.

It will be completely inexcusable if Theriot is still at SS next season. I'm fine with him at 2B, but you just don't win with subpar defense up the middle. Our front office had better wise up when it comes to issues like these. It's painfully obvious.

He manages a pitching staff pretty well. He almost never leaves starters in for too long and he doesn't tolerate pitchers who don't throw strikes. My only complaint is Gregg...and I'm not really sure that's Lou's fault.

I think he tends to over-manage every so often, but every manager does.

I don't have much beef with Lou, to be honest. But I'd like everyone gone. From Hendry all the way down. So that includes Lou.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

put me down for that. lou gets too much of the blame, but i wouldn't cry if he was gone.

I think the whole team is catching a break. We are moneywise the Yankees and Red Sox of the NL. If this kinda collaspe was happening to them every players and coach would be held accountable. It's like the "loveable losers" stigma still exist to the media. I don't get any radio or newspaper from chicago are they going after players like soriano and soto?

This has happened to the Mets the last couple of years and even this year, so it's not just the "lovable losers" thing.

It's not really relevant, but on that Theriot play you were talking about I'm pretty sure the infield fly rule was (or should have been) called, so there actually wouldn't be any forceout anywhere, so it makes sense to throw home there.
