Piniella has to be canned

It's not going to be Piniella or any other manager that will turn things around for the Cubs. The players have to start playing baseball. That's the only chance we have.

I think you're right. Did canning Gerald Perry make a difference? Not much, if any at all (If anything it made things worse because now Bradley doesn't have any friends.....boo hoo). Lou isn't the one up there striking out and hitting like garbage. Yes, he's made some bonehead decisions, but replacing him is not going to make that much of a difference on the performance of the team.

Now Hendry on the other hand has done more harm than good this year.

And Piniella or whoever needs to start pushing them harder to play better. The status quo clearly ain't working.

If there was an obvious replacement for Lou, then sure, I'm up for anything that would shake things up a little bit.
But seriously, who do you guys have in mind? Some other retread, like Trammel? Ryno ain't ready for the gig.
If we were going to do something drastic like fire Lou, I'd want to do something equally drastic in hiring a replacement, like getting Bobby Valentine back from Japan.
Anyone want to calculate the odds of Hendry doing something like that?
One in sixty billion? One in 300 quatrillion?

Get used to Lou.

There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Hendry has done more harm? You mean by giving Lou the exact team he wanted? That seems like a Lou problem which was enabled by Hendry. Lou's not devoid of blame when it comes to the roster, in fact, most of the blame should be placed on him. Every move Hendry made was because he was trying to give Lou the team he wanted.

Am I the only one who looks at Piniella after every game and sees nothing but a broken man who is completely lost and exhausted and appears to be waiting for his time here to come to an end? I know there's only so much that he can do to motivate the team, but damn if he doesn't just look the part of the lifeless figurehead of an equally lifeless team. Just an observation.

And ruby is dead on regarding Lou's influence over the roster. I tried to make that point early on in this thread as well.

Yes, but Hendry is the enabler who made the actual moves. He should've tried to talk some sense into Lou

And I didn't say Hendry has done more harm than Lou. I said he's done more harm than good.

I 100% agree with you Rube. This is Lou's team.
But isn't a GM supposed to have a little bit more spine in these matters? Because Jim did the exact same thing with Dusty. He gave him the team he wanted, and it was bad.

I hate to admit it, but I honestly think Jim knows more about who's going to play well than old guys in their 60's, like Lou and Dusty. I wish he'd stop letting his managers dictate his clubhouses.

He definitely should have more of a backbone, that's his problem. There was no reason to completely revamp a 97 win team. Some changes should have happened, but having an opening day roster with 12 new faces on it was way overboard. Lou asked for changes, Hendry made them happen. The 2 are married to each other now though, the team belongs to both of them and it's going down in flames.

That makes my point for me. They were underperforming, so they canned the manager.

Then they won the World Series.

Come on. We all know that the manager plays a role and it is an important role, but the majority of the success and failure of the team depends on the players on the field who are actually coming in contact with the baseball.

I'm talking about on a game by game basis. Building the team is another story.

I could make the same argument. "Why even have high priced players? Just get a good manager." But than that whole way of thinking breaks down because Lou is generally known as one of the better managers in the game.

You have a manager so he can MANAGE the players. Not win for them, manage them. He can't hit the ball for them.

On paper, this team is elite. However, everyone has decided to forget how to swing. No matter how many times you post it, I just can't believe that's Lou's fault.

And again, I know full well that Lou has messed up in quite a few situations this year, but it's more than bonehead moves that landed us at 35-37 record.
