The future of analyzing fielding
#1
Looks like we'll be able to measure fielding with a great deal of accuracy very soon.

Pretty amazing.

The system can show exactly where a ball was hit, and the speed of the ball and the runners throughout a play. It can also show how long it took a ball to be returned to the infield.

I have no idea how youd even put that information into context of good or average or bad.

I'd imagine you could create a multi-factor model that combines reaction time ratings relative to ground covered to approximate range and combine it with fielding %. Not sure if it would tell the whole story because context and positioning are so important to fielding, but it is better than what we currently have.

Did you read the entire article? The system measures damn near everything.

I don't know how I feel about it. I mean, camera's doing it? Pretty soon we won't need scouts at all, just let camera's tell us who is good and bad.

Don't worry- the Cubs will continue to ignore stats and sabermetrics and will rely on scouts while the rest of the league passes them by.

I would like a good mix. Numbers still only go so far. I think you still need to SEE a player.

And the Cubs have a good mix, and talk about it all the time. You don't sign Milton Bradley for $10 million per if you ignore sabermetrics.

They finally have, but as of a couple years ago they used to laugh off any talk of sabermetrics, saying they'd rather trust their eyes. I agree that there needs to be a mix.

I wasn't commenting on the Cubs, I was saying I think a good mix is needed. Not all one way or the other.

The Cubs will be the 29th team to employ this.
There's got to be at least one team that's even more Luddite.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
