Soriano and his position.

I'm not sure if this has ever come up here, or sure if it's ever occured to anyone else. But why exactly does Soriano play left field if he started his career in the infield. Quite honestly, I don't think Soriano is a good outfielder. Anyone who hops when they catch a fly ball probably shouldn't be out there. And he makes too many bad plays out there. He is the only outfielder on this team that whenever a ball is hit to him I half expect him to either A) Have the ball bounce off of his glove. B ) Miss the ball completely. C) Jump for the ball and miss the ball. or D) Hurt himself in the process of catching or trying to catch the ball.
Why exactly does he play in left field when someone else on our roster like Reed could play Left if he was comfortable with it and move Alfonso to the infield if hes still able to do that without sucking in the field?

Hopping when catching a fly ball has nothing to do with a fielder being good or bad. If he had an error or injury half the time the ball was hit to him he would have 72 errors/injuries on the season right now. He plays left field because thats usually where you put your worst fielder and no he cant play the infield without sucking anymore.

Soriano at 2nd base would be an absolute train wreck. He seems to field about 50% of slow rolling balls in the outfield grass cleanly, imagine rockets in the infield. And I can't imagine him turning a double play right now. Do we want Carlos Lee taking Soriano and his gimpy legs out on a double play as well? He's not good anywhere, but LF is the safest place for him right now. He had the talent and range to be a good SS/2B coming up, but he has zero fundamentals fielding groundballs, so finally he was moved to the outfield. Now he doesn't have that range and hasn't played there in years, it would be really bad.

Since we're having trouble finding a 2nd baseman who can hit his way out of a paper bag, the idea of putting Alf there isn't <i>that</i> far-fetched. Especially since I would love to see Jake Fox get a full-time gig, and LF would be a good position for him.
Our offense would improve, without question.

The trouble is this: 2nd base is a premium position. Alf was a below average fielder there 5-6 years ago. I would guess that in 2009, his defense would be so bad as to negate whatever offensive gains we might get from the switch.

It isn't going to happen, but I must say that I'd be interested in watching it if we did try it. I mean, for all his faults, Alf is a a good athlete. He did play there before.

ya see.. i guess i should have actually looked up his stats.. when he was a second baseman I was only like 10 or 11 so I wasn't INto baseball as a whole.. but mosty just your average 10 year old who said he was a Cub fan

but it seems to me now, after seeing some other opinions, there seems to be more negatives then positives on Soriano going back to the Infield

Soriano was a horrendous defender at 2B. Range....glove....turning it...he was terrible. And he has only gotten older and larger since. It would really be a crazy idea to try to do that to force Jake Fox (who also is a horrible defender) into the lineup.
