Julio Lugo

I despise them, but at some point we're going to have to acknowledge that is isn't luck.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Yeah...I'm thinking they're just a good team.

Pujols is the best hitter on the planet. Holliday, and Ludwick are both legit middle of the order guys. Ankiel hits for some power. We know how valuable DeRosa is. Carpenter and Wainwright would be top starters on any team in the league.

You surround that talent with a solid supporting cast and you've got yourself a playoff contender.

They are a good team, but they aren't THAT good. They aren't good enough to score a combined 7 runs off of Santana and K-Rod on days where they have their stuff. No one is. They got a gift wild pitch by Broxton to keep them alive in their game against the Dodgers. And a gift hit by pitch last night. And I fail to believe that the Red Sox system sucks so much that they can't get anything out of Lugo yet as soon as he comes over to the Cardinals he is an all star caliber player. I understand that every team goes through lucky and unlucky stretches during the year. The Cardinals just seem to have everything going their way right now.

LaRussa also has an endless supply of PEDs that he doles out to his players. That tends to help.

They've been getting a fair amount of luck lately. Wandy Rodriguez leaves early in his last start against them, Oswalt scratched the night before his start, now Niese destroys his hamstring in the 1st inning against them. And the Dodgers just did not show up at all for that series. Sure the Cardinals pitched alright but Manny had his worst series in years, and they had runners on like 20 of their first 21 innings and scored 1 run.

They're a very good team, but they're getting the breaks lately too.

They banned beer in their clubhouse, so Lugo doesn't play shitfaced anymore.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

Apparently the ban doesn't extend to weed though. Go check out Motte's photo on MLB GameDay.

I wasn't saying that they haven't been lucky over the last week or two. That happens all the time in sports. ALL the time, even in the playoffs.

I was saying that the Cards year-in year-out ability to compete with us on half our budget isn't sheer luck.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. One thing, Kabes: the Cards don't compete "year in and year out" on "half" the Cubs budget. For one thing, it is only in recent years that the Cubs have started consistently out-spending the Cards. For another, the Cardinals have always been relatively big spenders in the NL Central. For still another, it's never ever been "half" of what the Cubs spend.
