Julio Lugo
#1
What was the Cubs rationale for not picking up Lugo?

Julio has come out of the gate swinging for the Cardinals. The guy has 3 triples in 10 games and has scored 8 runs. His BA as a Cardinal is 372 and OBP of 378.

When Theriot was hit last night I was concerned that we were about to get a taste of Soriano at second base. Tonight we are supposed to get the return of Aaron Miles. I don't know which is worse.

At the time, Boston fans were saying that he is washed up. Some Cub fans were saying that with Blanco and Scales, there was no need to think about Lugo as he would take bats away from watching these guys develop/produce.

Yeah, the Cardinals traded Chris Duncan and cash for him but it's not like the Cubs are doing much with at least one of either Micah Hoffpauir and/or Jake Fox on the bench.

Well, Bleacher Nation figured it out. The Cards made a deal with Lucifer and are set for now. I'm hoping payment for the deal comes due very soon.

Because by all accounts his defense was awful and if we need a .712 OPS from a MI I will live with the Cajuns.

Plus, do you really think the wife beater will keep up his 1.052 OPS pace? Come on.

I don't expect Lugo to keep up his >1.000 OPS but he will beat out Miles 2009 MLB OPS of 500. I should have pointed out that at least Miles OPS is AAA is 566 and his OBP is 267 so it was about time to call him up.

I understand that the Cubs would have to release him if they didn't call him up so maybe a bit more time on the DL would have been in order.

I think signing a AAAA guy in his 30's to a 2-year, 5 million dollar deal in the midst of a deep recession, and then trading last year's team MVP to make room for him was a fine idea.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

I'm not so sure that the Cards even needed Lugo. And, yeah, what Clapp said. Lugo would suck balls right now if he were a Cub. I'm certain of it. He'll come off his high, and then will disappear by September.

The fact that all of this happened like 5 months ago, and the players being discussed aren't on our team anymore? Rehashing this for the thousandth time will do what?

They needed IF depth with Greene out and worries of Ryan's bat.

And Lugo's 9th extra base hit as a Cardinal. Incredible.

The Cardinals have just been getting so lucky lately. They catch the Dodgers when they can't hit. The catch Broxton, K-Rod, and Santana when they can't pitch. They've gotten flat out gifts with great performances from players like Pineiro and Lugo who everyone thought was done. With their luck they should go out and sign Mark Prior to be their number 5 starter now.
