2. The Bradley signing has looked bad, but...I would still do it over again. Our options seemed to be Milton, or either Ibanez, Abreu or Dunn. Ibanez and Abreu have had wonderful seasons so far, but both are real old, defensive liabilities, and should be expected to decline.
Dunn is typical Dunn; he has more homers than Bradley, Fukudome and Aramis combined, but he sucks with the glove.
I think Milt will continue his upward progression, and be worth the 30 mil by the time all is said and done.
1. Disagree to an extent, but certainly not worth rehashing.
2. I find it interesting that Dunn has been moved to 1B and the Nats have started winning, he had some horrendous error numbers in the OF this year.

Yeah, he was so miserable in the OF this year that it's nearly obscured the fact that he's, by most statistical measures, the 3rd best hitter in the league this year, behind only Pujols and Prince Fielder.
But for us it probably wouldn't have worked; we need good OF defense, and we already have a good 1st baseman.
So, go Bradley!

IF the Cubs could have kept them both, and decided they would rather have 3 prospects, then Hendry made a mistake. If, on the other hand, as all evidence points, it was an either/or proposition, I understand why they did it.

He did it to get Peavy. That's what all evidence points to. The Pads wanted pitching prospects. Hendry went and got some. Somehow the deal got fucked, and we got stuck with no DeRosa and no Peavy. Now DeRosa is a Cardinal and Peavy is a White Sock.

I don't think anyone would have believed you if, last December, you would have predicted that. Unfortunate turn of events, to be sure.
I really hope our playoff chances don't come down to being one game down to the Cards in the standings, because there will be a tremendous amount of second-guessing about what went on last off-season.
It's going to be a good race to October. We got slaughtered tonight, but I think we're a pretty good team. In fact, I really think we'll play pretty good ball the rest of the way. I'm just worried that the Cards will also play well.

While I agree that it will be a good race by October, today the Cubs - without Ramirez, Z, Lilly, Johnson and Soriano showing in a power slump - are not a good team.

DeRo's salary over Miles: $3 million
Yeah, it was a fucking stupid decision.
And once and for all, please just admit that Miles was brought in to replace DeRo. He was signed the SAME DAY that DeRo was inexplicably traded. His role on the Cardinals the year before was exactly like DeRo's with the Cubs: super utility guy who can fill in at a plethora of positions.
Last year, DeRo played 65 games in the outfield for us, 22 at 3B, as well as 1B and SS, so don't tell me he was our fucking 2nd baseman.
derosa was our fucking 2nd baseman and had he not been traded would have played mostly 2nd base this year. MILES DID NOT REPLACE DEROSA. FONTENOT REPLACED DEROSA.
follow along: DEROSA WAS NOT TRADED TO MAKE ROOM FOR MILES. to think that is absolutely retarded. drosa was traded to make room for bradley. fontenot was given the 2nd base job. miles was brought in to be a backup. it's so simple.
hendry never once thought that miles was going to bring to the table what derosa did. he thought fontenot might, but not miles.

It's the Gary Gaetti syndrome. When someone plays way above his head, the Cubs expect it to continue the following year. Fontenot was good in his roll last year and the Cubs thought he would perform at a similar level given full time AB's, so DeRosa was expendable. The were wrong about Fontenot, which makes the DeRosa trade stupid. As was said above, Miles was brought in to be a backup- which makes his contract even dumber.

Wouldn't expecting a guy like DeRosa to maintain or better his career year which occurred at age 33 be the very definition of "Gary Gaetti" syndrome? Much more so than expecting a guy to repeat his age 28 season, like Fontenot?

No. Gaetti was 39 years old and hit .320/.397/.594 in only 37 games with the Cubs after a handful of pretty mediocre seasons. I don't see how you can compare that situation to DeRosa.
Fontenot doesn't really compare to Gaetti either. He's closer to Hollandsworth -- which was also a bad idea.

I agree. And I brought up Gaetti at the time. I had no problem trading DeRosa, and was impressed that the Cubs finally traded someone at their peak (even if I wasn't happy with what they got in return). But I wanted to use the savings to sign the O-Dog, and instead we gave 2B to Fontenot. Trading DeRosa wasn't the problem- expecting Fontenot to perform at a high level was.

It's gonna be great when Butcher tries to argue and my wiener is in his mouth
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy
