Lilly has shoulder surgery
#16
<!--quoteo(post=68276:date=Nov 5 2009, 10:51 AM:name=Butcher)-->QUOTE (Butcher @ Nov 5 2009, 10:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->Lackey is my first choice if we're going after a SP free agent. Everyone after him gets a big 'meh' from me.

Bedard would be an interesting risk, depending on how much he'll be asking. Sheets? Man...I think all those years of Prior and Wood permanently fatigued me on high injury risk/high reward type pitchers.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm only throwing those names out there because I don't think there is a chance in hell we take on a long-term commitment from a Lackey type right now and the fact that there just aren't many solid SPs available on the market this offseason in our price range anyway.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Ted Lilly knows he will get bored at spring training and probably start to annoy some teammates and coaches. The Cubs left-hander has begun throwing lightly two-to-three times a week after shoulder surgery in November. But he isn’t sure when he will be able to rejoin the rotation.

“I don’t know what the answer is. I know (I’m) gonna try (to) get out there competitively as soon as possible,” Lilly said Friday at a Cubs Convention media event. “I guess it depends (on) how my shoulder reacts when I start cranking it up.”<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->“First of all, I don’t know where some of these stories (come from),” Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. “We’re very comfortable that Ted’s gonna be fine. There’s no (feeling) like: ‘Oh, there was a big tear nobody told us about.’ It was a very minor cleanup thing.”

Hendry pointed out that the Cubs have two off-days built into the first 10 days of their schedule, and could afford to wait if Lilly is a few weeks behind.

“Arguably, you could go without five starters,” Hendry said. “We’re not anticipating any major setbacks or (feeling like) we’ve got to go out and get somebody because Ted’s gonna be hurt worse than we know.”<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

MESA, Ariz. -- Continuing his comeback from offseason shoulder surgery, Ted Lilly threw his first simulated game Monday at HoHoKam Park, even mixing in breaking balls for the first time this spring.

"They weren't very good, but I threw some," Lilly said. He threw about 35 pitches over three "innings" while facing live hitters.

Next step?

"I don't know," he said. "What I'd like to do is pitch in a (spring) game, with some fans out there and umpires."

Lilly still is not expected back before late April.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Sounds like late April at the earliest.
