Yankees interested in Zambrano?
#1
I posted this in the MLB News and Notes but thought it deserves its own thread.

Per ESPN Rumor Central

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->The New York Yankees, intent on adding another pitcher for 2010, have inquired about the availability of Chicago Cubs' right-hander Carlos Zambrano, according to a report by Mike Puma in today's New York Post.

Puma adds that the Cubs' asking price for Zambrano is too high, even though he had a few stints on the disabled list in 2009. As a result, the Yankees are more likely to go the free agent route and pursue the likes of Jason Marquis, Joel Pineiro and/or Ben Sheets.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So what do you think? If we were to trade him I think we ought to do a total rebuild. I was once for a total rebuild, but I don't think we can obtain enough prospects to make a total rebuild worthwhile with the economy and lack of teams willing to take on additional salary. I still think we should listen. I'd ask for Phil Hughes in any deal.

I posted this in the news and notes too, but since it has its own thread

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Carlos Zambrano is not interested in waiving his no-trade clause to go to the Yankees, according to his agent, Barry Praver.
Big Z is owed $53.75 million over the next three years. With a full no-trade clause, there's a decent chance he will stay in the Windy City through the duration of the pact.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I agree with Miles.
Big Z Staying Put

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->For the record, Z's agent, Barry Praver (who is always accessible), sent me an e-mail saying: "Jim (Cubs GM Hendry) has not approached us about Carlos waiving the no-trade provision of his contract nor is Carlos interested in waiving it."

As you know, teams can talk about and ask about and dream about players all day long, but that doesn't mean there is a trade happening. Such is the case here. And as you further know, I think it would be a huge mistake to trade Zambrano. He is his own worst enemy at times, but the Cubs are better off with him than without him. As of now, the rotation has three sure things: Z, Dempster and Randy Wells. Carlos Silva now is in the mix as are Jeff Samardzija and Tom Gorzelanny. Take Z out of that mix and you've really got a potential mess on your hands.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

So there is literally no package the Yankees could put together that would satisfy you guys?
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

Unless they were to send us a major league ready SP and a decent young position player prospect, I'm not interested.

There is no deal that Hendry could put together for Z that would satisfy me.

Yeah. They could send us A-Rod, Sabathia, Jeter, and Rivera, eat their salary to make it even, and I'd still be pissed.

No. Of course they could put together a package that would satisfy me. But I'm guessing if we were to trade Z at this point, we wouldn't get equal value. If we're actually going into a rebuilding mode (which we aren't), I'm fine with trading everyone -- including Z.

Good, only way I'd take him and that contract is if you took Melky along with Igawa.

They only time I'd like having Z on my team is when he faces youkie.

And that's my point. We wouldn't get equal value in return for Z. Our rotation is thin as is, and trading Z would completely screw us over.

And since when do the Yankees give a shit about big contracts? You guys could absorb Z's contract and not think twice about it.

Put me down for this. Unless we were overwhelmed, I prefer Zambrano to stay right here.

Jeter is an overrated cocksucker. Have a nice day.

I like Jeter. Yeah, if he weren't a Yankee, he wouldn't be as highly regarded, however, he's had some fabulous moments. Remember him diving into the stands and busting his face to catch a foul ball? That was a balls out play that very few would bother with.

Quite frankly, if it weren't so easy, I'd be a Yankees fan. I used to love watching Mattingly in the 80s. There's no way I can root for a team with such an overwhelming competitive advantage, and no team will ever replace the Cubs, but if I were to make a deal with the devil, it would be to be a Yankees fan.
I'm 100% fine with this. I'm just glad there's an actual plan in place that isn't, "Let's load up on retreads and hope we get lucky." I'm a little tired of that plan.
