Spring Training 2010
His lack of discipline is why I don't see him being a successful starter ever, but I think he could be a good lefty pinch hitter (where patience isn't as important) and a 4th outfielder that can play all 3 spots.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

Something to bear in mind with respect to walks - guys are generally nudged toward swinging in Spring Training. Especially young guys.

Even guys that need to work on their patience and plate approach?

I wouldn't be surprised. I'm not saying it's the best way to do things, it's just something I've read (not specific to the Cubs or Colvin).

He had a slow start last year while he was dealing with an injury, but after he was healthy he took off.

He's been working on plate discipline and made significant strides last year. If he can walk like he did last year, that would be good enough. We'll just have to see if he's capable of that. He still strikes out quite a bit.

Don't look now, but Silva is starting to pitch fairly well lately. I didn't want to waste a roster spot on this guy, but it is starting to look like he's earned a job either as the #5 starter or long man in the pen. Not sure how I feel about this, as I still believe he's useless, but at least we won't be paying him to sit at home and eat himself into another zip code.

Silva has looked impressive these past two outings after getting shelled by the White Sox. He may be earning that 5th starters spot.

Speaking of which, with the news on Lilly being back by mid April which is when we would need the fifth starter for the first time, looks like its not four pitchers competing for one spot

Silva's previous outing was as bad as a scoreless outing can get - he gave up like two baserunners per inning.

true, but was it uglier than the Cubs no hitter through five or six innings they had the other day?

That would concern me if the other 5th starter candidates hadn't sucked balls equally or worse thus far.

Marshall will never be a decent SP. He belongs in the pen.

And Gorzo blows, though he was my choice for the #5 spot up until Silva came back from the dead.

He was my choice to win the spot as well, just looked at his stats for Spring, they arent that great. Though its Spring Training so how much stock can you really put into it?

I agree with you Rok on Marshall. He never really gave me confidence when he started games, but he was good when he was in pen. Samardzija doesn't have enough pitches to be a starter, and might need to start the year in the minors.

I think its either Gorzy or Silva, with Gorz likely getting the nod because I dont think Lou wants three lefties in the pen
