And although I know Hendry and Wilken are complete douchebags who couldn't draft their way out of a paper bag, Keith Law (who is NOT a big fan of Hendry's) has the Cubs with the 7th best farm system in the majors.
I'd also add that I've seen some goofy aggregate rankings based on John Sickels rankings, and the Cubs come out pretty well in those as well.
KLaw rankings
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->7. Chicago Cubs
They've hit on several top draft picks under scouting director Tim Wilken as well as a couple of later-round finds, but the system is led by 19-year-old Dominican shortstop Starlin Castro, who is already in Double-A.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I might also add that I was fairly happy to see the #29 and #30 teams end up being the Cardinals and White Sox, respectively.

Fuck yeah BT! Hendry CAN draft his way out of a wet paper bag.
In all seriousness, I've been somewhat pleased with our offseason so far given our budget contraints. My problem is that the constraints are a direct result of Hendry's last 3 years of FA signings. That's what I'm unhappy about.

Whoever said that Wilken can't draft hasn't been paying attention to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

#7? I'm not sure I agree with it but I'll take it. The Cubs have a long way to go to break into the top 10, I think Law's crazy infatuation with Castro has gone too far IMO. I think next year the Cubs could definitely be in the top 10 as there are some guys on the cusp of breaking out as long as they produce at higher levels.

I can't watch it anyway, but did you happen to catch whose top 50 it was? Was it MLB network's list or some publication's?

I think so as well. The way everybody's talking about Castro sounds exactly like the way they talked about Patterson and Pie. "Incredible talent... body will fill out and the power will come..." Remember when Pie used to get Vladimir Guerrero comparisons? Castro just seems so raw to me still. I want to see more. It's clear he has a ton of talent and -could- be special, but it seems like all of a sudden he's a lock All-Star to some of these people.

Scarey's gonna have to change his undies, that'll be like porn for him.

Don't get me wrong, I like Castro quite a bit. But Law among others are raving daily about him. I just saw in a chat that he ranked Castro the best SS prospect. He has a lot of exceptional tools. He almost never strikes out, he squares up the ball extremely well, he hits to all fields, and his defense is top of the line. He still has to prove that he can keep up his consistency though.

If Castro isn't the best SS prospect right now, who is?

Fanhouse's Frankie Piliere(was a scout the last 3 years, last year for the Rangers), has Starlin as his #11 overall prospect:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->The Skinny: Cubs fans seem to be ready to push this guy to the show in 2010, but he may not be quite ready for that. Castro is improving rapidly at the plate and has shown the ability to punish good pitching. The power is still coming along and should continue to as he fills out. He has all the tools to be the shortstop in Chicago for years to come.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Vitters is 53rd and Brett Jackson is 72nd.

He also has Castro as the #1 shortstop prospect in baseball. The only other guy I can think of who might be better (and I don't think he is due to concerns about his bat) is Escobar. I could be missing someone though.

Actucally, there's not a whole lot to pick from from what I know. Castro or Milwaukee's Elcides Escobar would be pretty much anyone's choice for best SS prospect.

I think Scarey has that right. I hope Law is correct (and he IS a good judge of talent), but he considers Castro to be superstar material.
