The part that piqued my interest:

The Nationals should have plenty of prospects in exchange. However, that would also give the Cubs the worst defensive outfield in baseball.

A big no. He's the only good defensive player in the everyday lineup outside of Lee, and he's a fine #2 hitter as he'll get on base. Who is going to bat 2nd for us then? I'm not looking at the next offseason. This team has to win now ans it sounds like we'll be very willing to spend $ at the deadline, so I don't really care about Fuk's contract. We're a btter team right now with him on it.

Yeah, if Nady were a sure thing, and Colvin any less of a question mark, I'd have little problem trading Fuk away for anything we could get. If we start dismantling the team next offseason or if any of the above question marks work in our favor by the trade deadline, then sure, let Fuk go, but right now the timing just isn't right. We need as much depth as possible to start the season, and just see how everything plays out.

That's how I feel. Lou's already said Nady isn't going to be playing much early on in the year, and it's no guarantee his arm's 100% anytime soon. If we had a lot of good defenders on the rest of the field, I wouldn't mind so much.
Additionally, I think Fukudome's a bit underrated by most Cubs fans. His contract, amazing Opening Day in 2008, and all of the hype surrounding him makes it disappointing he's not like an .850+ OPS type of hitter, but he still gets on base at a high clip and is one of the best defensive right fielders in baseball. We have many, many bigger problems than him.

Hmmm...Colvin had a .332 OBP last year, despite playing a portion of the year in A-ball.
Up at Double A, his OBP was .334.
For a corner OFer, that would suck in the <i>majors</i>, much less the low minors.
I consider you one of the foremost authorities on our farm guys, Scarey, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you that a .334 OBP in AA is fantastic. I'm guessing that translates to about a .300 OBP in MLB, which is like the Mendoza line for getting on base.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

We know what we are getting w/ Fukudome.

If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

Soriano's annoying as hell, but if healthy(which he wasn't even close to for most of last year), he'll carry us for a month or two and put up big numbers. He always has. Shit, last April when he was healthy, he hit 7 homers and had a .955 OPS. He was our best player. I think we get 30+ homers out of him this year.
