Fukudome to the Nats?
#1
Link
The part that piqued my interest:
QUOTE A club source said the Nationals have discussed a trade for right fielder Corey Hart with the Brewers, and talked to the Cubs about outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. They have even inquired about Rays outfielder B.J. Upton, though they came away feeling Tampa Bay wouldn't part with the 24-year-old speedster unless it was out of the AL East race this summer.

But none of those talks have been particularly substantive; the Nationals and Brewers haven't found common ground on a deal for Hart, who is making $4.8 million in his second year of arbitration. Fukudome, who has underperformed in Chicago since coming over from Japan, still has two years left on a deal that will pay him a combined $26.5 million this season and next year and offer him limited no-trade protection. Unless the Cubs were willing to eat a decent portion of the 32-year-old's contract, it's unlikely the Nationals would land him.

If Colvin is for real and his ST wasn't a fluke, I wouldn't hate a deal sending Fukudome away.

The Nationals should have plenty of prospects in exchange. However, that would also give the Cubs the worst defensive outfield in baseball.
I got nothin'.

A big no. He's the only good defensive player in the everyday lineup outside of Lee, and he's a fine #2 hitter as he'll get on base. Who is going to bat 2nd for us then? I'm not looking at the next offseason. This team has to win now ans it sounds like we'll be very willing to spend $ at the deadline, so I don't really care about Fuk's contract. We're a btter team right now with him on it.

Yeah, if Nady were a sure thing, and Colvin any less of a question mark, I'd have little problem trading Fuk away for anything we could get. If we start dismantling the team next offseason or if any of the above question marks work in our favor by the trade deadline, then sure, let Fuk go, but right now the timing just isn't right. We need as much depth as possible to start the season, and just see how everything plays out.

That's how I feel. Lou's already said Nady isn't going to be playing much early on in the year, and it's no guarantee his arm's 100% anytime soon. If we had a lot of good defenders on the rest of the field, I wouldn't mind so much.

Additionally, I think Fukudome's a bit underrated by most Cubs fans. His contract, amazing Opening Day in 2008, and all of the hype surrounding him makes it disappointing he's not like an .850+ OPS type of hitter, but he still gets on base at a high clip and is one of the best defensive right fielders in baseball. We have many, many bigger problems than him.

Agree with Clapp and rok; mostly because we won't know if Clovin is "for real" for a year or two.
He's sucked for years. Now he's had one good month playing practice baseball, and we want to anoint him our everyday guy?

Keep Fuk.

Trade Soriano and eat a ton of the contract. He's the worst OFer on the team.

It doesn't take much away from your point, but Colvin had a fantastic year at AA last year. It's not just his spring training.

Hmmm...Colvin had a .332 OBP last year, despite playing a portion of the year in A-ball.
Up at Double A, his OBP was .334.
For a corner OFer, that would suck in the majors, much less the low minors.

I consider you one of the foremost authorities on our farm guys, Scarey, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you that a .334 OBP in AA is fantastic. I'm guessing that translates to about a .300 OBP in MLB, which is like the Mendoza line for getting on base.

Trading him is a neat thought, but we would need a big time replacement in return. Colvin might have the goods...........but can he take a pitch? Can he make adjustments?

We know what we are getting w/ Fukudome.

We have no idea what we are getting with Colvin just yet.

Care to back that up?
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

Soriano's annoying as hell, but if healthy(which he wasn't even close to for most of last year), he'll carry us for a month or two and put up big numbers. He always has. Shit, last April when he was healthy, he hit 7 homers and had a .955 OPS. He was our best player. I think we get 30+ homers out of him this year.
