It's not like I just pulled that comment out of my ass. It's the only explanation I've heard on why most SS prospects (yes, I wasn't just defending Castro) seem to struggle defensively in the lower minors. Troy Tulowitzki and Elvis Andrus are considered the gold standards at SS right now, and they had comparable error numbers to Castro's.

BTW, Rich Harden Jr. went 7 innings today giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 run, and only managed to strike out 5. Jay Jackson went 8 innings, gave up 2 hits, 1 walk, no runs, and had 4 strikeouts. It would really help to have those two filling up the rotation for the next few years.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

Kevin Goldstein(Baseball Prospectus & ESPN) was talking about Hak-Ju Lee on Twitter...

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->#Cubs SS Hak-Ju Lee (HUGE fan) stole four bases tonight; also 11 hits in last six games.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I asked him if he thinks nearly as high of Lee as Castro...

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->@TheBlogfines I had Castro in my Top 50, Lee in my Top 100 for whatever that's worth to you.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Another guy also asked him a Castro/Lee question...

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->@Kevin_Goldstein so, if I sent Theriot swimming with a large cement block, between Lee & Castro, Cubs are set at SS?<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Goldstein:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->@WisconsinRob Big time. If everything goes perfect, I think Castro goes to 2b once Lee is ready, but things never go perfectly.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

And the Peoria announcer chimed in:
<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->@Kevin_Goldstein and his (Hak Ju Lee) defense is phenomenal.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Man, it sucks hearing about all this great defense(potentially) down in the minors and we have to watch absolutely shit with our major league club.

They use a bigger ball in the minors, right?

Are you predicting they will be mediocre and will not make it to the big leagues as starters till 2012?

Yeah because bringing him up would totally stunt his growth. What if he goes into a slump? What if he gets booed?

What if he comes to spring training next year and has to be built up again which keeps him from starting the year in the rotation? And what if he makes the Cubs rotation next year and burns out at the end of July because he's not used to pitching a full baseball season? THOSE are my concerns. Not slumps or booing.

Excuse my tunnel vision. I'm just used to Coach's responses in this thread being directed to my thoughts on Cashner.

Just having some fun.
But the same can be said for Cashner as well.

I want the best players in our system to be available to our big league team. This babying of guys doesnt help or help them. Everyone will face some adversity, and the good ones will overcome it. We could have left Patterson in the minors for 3 more years, and he still wouldnt have been able to listen plate discipline.
