2010 Minor League Roundup
QUOTE Dale (Calvert City KY)
Is Matt Szczur a big time baseball prospect, now that he will be solely focused on the sport? What is his ceiling?
Klaw
Every area guy I talked to about him this spring called him a 4th/5th outfielder with plus speed and outstanding makeup but limited baseball tools.

From the Keith Law chat.
You gotta admit, Law's answer almost reads as if I made it up as a way to spoof Hendry/Wilken.

I mean, that is absolutely their prototype.

Law still loves Castro, though (it should be noted that he was trumping Castro a long time ago):

Castro.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

How is that their prototype? Who, beside Colvin fits that description?
Here is Jim Callis:

QUOTE ill (Lincoln,NE): Thanks for answering my question Jim, Do you see Matt Szczur's ceiling being something along the lines of a Grady Sizemore type centerfielder or am I just being optimistic?

Jim Callis: Not saying he'll get there, but no, that's not an unrealistic ceiling. Szczur has top-of-the-line speed and athleticism, and he can really hit.

So Callis says Szczur's ceiling could be Sizemore. Is that prototype Hendry/Wilken?
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

It doesn't even sound like Law has seen very much of him.

To be fair, Law and many others that cover minor league prospects have not seen the majority of the guys these guys. They just got off of minor league numbers and information reported by scouts. Same as I do.

Yeah I know. Seems hard to make a solid judgment though if you are going on second and third hand sources. Whatever, I'm just trying to negate his "meh" opinion. Ha.

Yeah. All the opinions on prospects should be taken with a grain of salt. The positive ones too.

QUOTE Keith Law’s organizational rankings are out

Craig Calcaterra
Jan 26, 2011, 12:54 PM EST

As he does every year, Keith Law has released his organizational rankings. We’re talking farm systems here, not big clubs, as this will be followed up shortly — if form holds, tomorrow — by Keith’s Top 100 prospects list. Apologies, but both features are for ESPN Insider members only. But really, these are two of the features that make getting an Insider subscription worthwhile. If you care a lick about player development, you’ll be going back to them over and over throughout the season.

As for the systems: the Royals are at the very top. Not surprising at all given how much we’ve heard lately about how loaded their system is. The Rays are second, and will only be strengthened by an offseason that has given them a number of extra picks in this year’s draft. Other notables include the Braves at number three, the Phillies fifth, the Yankees ninth, the Red Sox 11th, the Cubs 20th, the Giants 23rd, the Mets 26th and the Brewers dead last.

As is always the case with these sorts of lists, the narrative assessment of that which is ranked is more useful than the number ranking in and of itself, so if you are able, I recommend giving Keith’s piece a read

20 out of 30. Not too good.

And it's amazing that the Phillies' farm is still ranked that high. Man...I'm so envious of that organization.

This is all he says about the Cubs. Pretty good comments considering we're ranked 20th. The last sentence is dumb. The only prospects we've given up were for Garza. Law implies we've been dishing them out left and right.
QUOTE 20. Chicago Cubs
A top-10 system before the Garza trade, the Cubs probably would place more guys in the 101-150 range than any organization except the Royals. They're loaded with high-floor players who have the potential to be above-average or better big leaguers but aren't there yet. Considering all the picks they've given up to sign free agents, it's remarkable how strong the system still is after the giant trade with Tampa Bay.

Considering the Cubs graduated two top 100 talents last year and traded one away (one fringe top 100 too), I'm not surprised they fell that far. There's some big time break out candidates in the Cubs system that could push them back into the top 10. Keep an eye on Robinson Lopez, Reggie Golden, Ben Wells, Matt Cerda, Hayden Simpson, Matt Szczur, Logan Watkins, Jae Hoon Ha, Nick Struck, Austin Reed, and Austin Kirk. Those guys making strides can really give a boost to this system. That and I do believe the Rickets will be spending on the draft and international FAs.

Wouldn't say "excited" about his bat, but Szczur could be special. @carl9730: Bat in #Cubs system to get real excited about? Seems P-heavy.

My guess he isn't excited about his bat right now, but thinks he can be a special player because he is a great athlete.
