I understand that Cashner is being groomed and stretched out to be a starter, but many SPs got started pitching out of the pen at the big league level to start their careers. Z in particular comes to mind, so I see nothing wrong with calling him up if we feel he can get hitters out. That said, we have too many pitchers on our staff to begin with. What happens to Silva or Gorzelanny when Lilly returns? I have a hard time envisioning 4 lefties pitching out of the pen, but that's just me. It would be nice if Silva could slot over to 7th or 8th inning duties, but I doubt that he wants to do that. This could get messy.

The difference is Z was starting and accustomed to starting throughout his minor league career. Cashner hasn't even been starting for a year and when he first started starting last year, he was lucky to get through the lineup twice because of his limited pitch count. He needs to learn how to get batters out multiple times and consistently handle a starter's workload IMO.
If we get to August and need a shot in the arm in the bullpen, I wouldn't mind throwing Cashner into the mix AFTER he's had the better part of a season to make full starts.

Yep, because our 2013 rotation is counting on him.

Because this team is knockin on the door for a World Series and the missing piece is Cashner? Nobody else can do what he can do?

Not exactly, but if there is someone down in the minors who might help us get there right now, the organization owes it to the fans to try anything at this point while the brief window of opportunity is still open. You can always send Cashner back down and resume his transition over to SP if it doesn't work out. I don't believe a small amount of failure would derail his career.

Adam Wainwright has had experience starting since he was in High School. Cashner has not.
Why do I feel like a broken record here?

You are correct on this one, Scarey.
Although the Cubs probably should use Cashner in the big pen this year if they feel he can help them, it is certainly understandable if they don't want to, given the fact that they see Cashner's future as a starter - something he's only been doing for a little over a year.

Didn't Cashner start a lot of games at TCU? Before his senior year?

i am one of the people who think the cubs should go get another veteran but like the idea of using prospects. I really like to check in Cubs prospects and think a couple could probably help.
I am really liking this place! Its really cool that there is someone like Scarey to talk prospects. How long have you been a minor league scout?

I'm not a scout. What makes you think that?
Sundevil eh? Do you live near ASU? Do you happen to get any chances to go see extended spring training games? Would be interested to know how some of the bigger names there are doing if you live near by.

Is this freaking KOZ?
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance
