Will anyone on the roster hit 20 homers this season?

Soriano 19
Colvin 18
Aram 16
Soto 15, might of had a shot if he hadn't gotten injured...
Dlee 13
Byrd 11
and the $14 million man with 10...

Aram and everyone above him should get there... Soto, depending how long he is out.. dlee no shot...
You know, for as inconsistent as Fukudome as been this year, his homers haven't been a problem. 10 homers in 255 ABs isn't that bad at all.

Four. The US will win the next World Cup, and Soriano will still be patrolling left field.

He'll be a really expensive pinch-hitter by year four unless we dump him on an AL team before then.

Money aside, in a couple years I'm sure a team like the A's or Blue Jays could use him to sell tickets and I think he would succeed as a mid-tier DH.

Too bad we can't launch both Fuk and Alf to Japan somehow. Neither of them should be starting on a major league roster anywhere.

Just looked up some splits...

Soriano went into the the June 1st game batting .301. Since then, he's hit at a .223 clip with a .282 OBP.

Frank Thomas was well past his prime and he was still considered a big bat to put in their lineups. What's the difference?

Frank Thomas career OBP (only the single most important statistic)- .419
Soriano's career OBP (and yes, it's actually below league-average)- .326

One guy gets on base less than the typical, run-of-the-mill ballplayer. The other guy gets on base more than Stan Musial, Wade Boggs, Joe DiMaggio, Rickey Henderson...those type of guys.

Kind of a difference.

(yeah, I'm being a dick, but a nearly 100 point difference in OBP is worth something, I think.)

OTOH, Toronto or some similar team may just want a guy with a little pop, and Alf has that. So maybe you're right. It'd be awesome to bid adieu to Alf, even if we had to eat substantial money.

At what point is his roster spot worth more than however much he's getting paid, if a league-minimum utility player can do the job...no worse?

When Soriano was signed, I was in the second month of my senior year of high school. I will be 25, (hopefully) graduating college, a third US president will have been elected and Soriano will have been on the team for nearly a third of my lifetime when his contract is over.

I'm asking a real question, not a rhetorical question. At what point? I'm serious...at what point is he literally taking up valuable space and his paycheck is no reason for his continued presence?

In his defense, this is a big problem for a lot of teams, not just Hendry. The Indians, for example, have the same situation with Travis Hafner, the Rockies with Todd Helton, the Astros with Carlos Lee....the teams feel as if they have to play these guys, just to justify the gigantic financial outlay, but it means putting a worse team on the field.

Maybe it isn't a fabulous idea to sign guys in their 30's to hundred-million-dollar contracts?

But I'm not trying to open up the Hendry debate again. I'm genuinely curious at what point a declining player simply has got to go...irrespective of his salary. I mean, if he's playing worse than a handful of guys we have waiting in AAA, he's just in the way, right? Is salary alone a reason to keep a guy on the roster? At some point do you deal him for whatever portion of his salary the market is willing to take on, just to rid yourself of him? He's not to that point yet but I seriously...can't see him being a reasonable presence on a 25-man roster two or three years from now.
