Did you ever see the original Maniac? It was crudely made but effective for its time. I know it left a lasting impression on me. It shared many of the same elements seen in that trailer.

I never saw it. Somehow it was never on my radar...

That would be HDNet Movies or AXS which I can't make heads or tails of these days. And I also have heard from several people that REC 3 was terrible, and almost didn't fit into the series.

Yeah. It's playing on HDNet Movies. And it isn't really worth bothering with.

Thanks to you douchebags lowering my expectations I ended up enjoying it. It wasn't anywhere near as good as the first 2, but I thought it had some decent moments. It's biggest problem is that it really wasn't scary at all (which, admittedly is a big problem for a horror movie). But it was fairly par for the course for a zombie movie, and any movie which shows a guy dressed up as spongejohn squarepants (for copyright reasons) getting eaten by zombies) can't be all bad.
I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

Same here..I noticed REC 3 was on Netfilex so I checked it out, and I thought it was pretty good. Then again (because I haven't seen them yet) I can't compare REC 3 to the first two.

[REC] 4 is also on the way in early 2014 and is supposedly a return to form for the series. It will be the last entry with the original chick from the first 2.

They are almost nothing like the 3rd. The first one was one of my favorite horror movies of the last 10 years. The second one was sufficiently different to not feel like a carbon copy. But everything about them, except the zombies, was different.

rok -- what's the word, man? Anything to look forward to coming out around Halloween this year? I saw You're Next recently and thought it was pretty solid...

Ha!! I've been waiting on rok as well for this.
I'm also looking for suggestions for some older classics that are worth watching this time of year. Old/new...doesn't matter.

I'm so far behind in movie watching these days. You're Next is definitely on my list, but haven't checked it out yet. Here are a few horror titles I'm looking forward to (not sure if they've been released yet) ranked in no particular order. I would caution you all that my tastes have gotten weirder lately as I've become more bored with traditional horror, so please keep that in mind if my suggestions cause you to waste multiple hours of your lives.
We Are What We Are (remake)
Dark Touch
The Sacrament
Jug Face
The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears
Cockneys vs. Zombies (horror comedy)
Horns
Almost Human
Errors of the Human Body
Frankenstein's Army
Static
I can't vouch for any of these, but they looked pretty interesting from the trailers.

Cockneys vs. Zombies was nothing special. A few laughs here and there, but otherwise just a Shaun of the Dead imposter. On to the rest of the list.

I'm not sure what compelled me, but I saw the Carrie remake last night.
It wasn't terrible, but the original is still far better. DePalma's direction of the massacre (with the split-screen technique) in the high school gym was far more interesting than anything that happened in the remake. They really didn't add any new ideas other than how teens use social media to bully kids today. I don't think I can recommend it.

It got mixed reviews, most of them saying exactly what you said.

The only horror remakes that ever work are ones that take chances and put a different spin on the original (Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead). These safe remakes piss me off. Just. Stop.

"Here Comes The Devil" was a pretty cool little horror film if you don't mind subtitles. Good stuff.
