So catching up on my Halloween viewing, "Attack the Block" turned out to be just ok. Really nothing special and the kid actors were quite annoying for the most part. Thank god for subtitles. At least the aliens were kinda cool in a cartoonish, though not scary, sort of way, so it wasn't a total waste. That said, Nick Frost was underutilized and not that funny. Meh. Once again the genre critics jizz all over themselves for no reason. 2.5/5 stars.

tired, and a bit tipsy, but I have a hard time arguing with any of this. It's not really an invasion movie, the "heros" are complete assholes (hey everyone, let's root for the jag offs that robbed the poor nurse!), and much of it is unintelligible.
Truth.

That's reassuring. For a second there, I thought I was the only one on the planet who wasn't impressed at all.
This brings me to the rest of my list that I watched over Halloween week. I honestly can't recommend any of those movies. "Dream Home", "Phase 7", "Tucker and Dale Vs Evil" and "Stake Land" have been the only genre movies that I enjoyed this season, and even those were highly flawed films. Good thing I watched some old black and white classics to pass the time or else I'd be really bummed out. What a horrible year for horror and film in general. The dumbing down of cinema continues.

I watched The Woman last night. It was pretty stupid.

Yeah, I watched it a couple of weeks ago, and I have nothing good to say about it. Very mean-spirited and the violence somehow managed to be both extreme and corny. The soundtrack made it an even worse experience, and it might have benefited from not having one at all, maybe. I pretty much hated every character in the movie.
What a crap year for horror.

I thought the premise had a lot of potential, but man...they couldn't have possibly screwed it up more.

Agreed. It's sad because the director's previous efforts (May and The Woods) were both solid. This movie was a complete mess. I think it tried and failed to be a dark comedy in some ways, and it played out too much like torture porn with a side of The People Under the Stairs.
Speaking of disappointing horror movies, I recently watched Chillerama (hated it) and The Perfect Host (entertaining until the shitty ending). and may need to take a break from indie films for a while. It's been a while since anything blew me away in the genre.

So I'm already scouring the interwebs to cue up some horror movie goodness for October. I have no life. I recently watched both "Kill List" and "The Theatre Bizarre" and thought they were fairly creative and interesting (I really liked the former and the latter was just plain weird but decent). This thread is always pretty fun, so I figured we'd kick it off early this year. Any recommendations or titles that people are looking forward to?

I think you mentioned the Revenent before and it looks like it's finally being released with some pretty good reviews behind it...

Yeah, I noticed that as well, and I think it's been on the shelf for 3 years. Strange.

You can rent V/H/S from iTunes/Amazon/etc. before it hits the theaters. I'm thinking of watching it tonight. I've read good things about it.

A friend gave me a copy a few weeks ago. I've been sitting on it since then. Anyway, he hated it, but his taste in movies is quite horrible, so I will make up my own mind.

I watched it tonight and liked it a lot. Probably the best horror anthology I can remember since Creepshow (not that there have been many good ones). I'll be curious what you think of it, rok.

I watched a movie called "Elevator" on Netflix the other night. I'd never heard of it, and had only seen a couple of the actors in it. I don't want to oversell it, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Sort of a cross between Speed and Devil, with no supernatural overtones (that will make sense once you see the movie). Again, it's not great, but it kept my attention, moved along at a fairly brisk clip, and contained a surprising amount of blood for a movie taking place on an elevator. Not on my "must see" list, but certainly worth your time if you have an hour and a half to kill.

This is from the same director as "Kill List," which, again, I liked very much.

I hurt my back last week and as a result I was camped on the couch most of the weekend watching Netflix. I decided to watch Hellraiser and Hellraiser 2 as I've never actually watched them. I've seen clips here and there, but never actually sat down and watched them start to finish. I always thought they were more campy than sincere, but I was surprised by how good the first one was (acting aside).
I'm not interested enough to really continue watching the series mostly because I assume they slide pretty quickly, much like the Nightmare on Elm Street series. But, I did enjoy those two.
