WGN No More?
Barring any unforeseen setbacks, it's official. R.I.P. WGN as we know it. Their new ultra-right wing overlords have already made a mutally beneficial deal with the Trumpsters before the ink on this merger has even dried.

That's really disappointing.

Finally, conservatives will have another set of alternatives to that liberal biased Fox News.

That sucks. But honestly, broadcast TV and radio of this ilk seems like a shitty investment right now, unless you have live sports content, and even then, it feels like the `best by' date is approaching. To be fair, they got a great price, but in terms of news and influence, your viewership is already conservative and will die off in the next 10 years, and from a typical advertiser perspective, that demo spends little money. I hate this for sentimental reasons, but I don't think it should worry anyone.

Then again, I never thought Trump could win, so what do I know...

No particular surprise.

Quote:CHICAGO (670 The Score) -- The Cubs will pull away from their partnership with NBC Sports Chicago -- as well as the White Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks -- and start their own television venture in October 2019, according to industry sources.

The Cubs have hired Mike McCarthy to lead the television venture moving forward, sources said. McCarthy was previously the president of the MSG Network and the CEO of the St. Louis Blues.

The NBC Sports Group and the aforementioned four teams each have a 20 percent stake in NBC Sports Chicago. The current deal between the five partners ends in October 2019. As the Cubs ready to go their own way, the White Sox, Bulls and Blackhawks have hired Phil Bedella to help run their next regional sports network. Bedella was the former general manager of Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

The four teams and Comcast SportsNet formed a partnership in 2004, putting an abundance of games on cable. Those cable broadcasts brought more than three times the amount of revenue for each team on a per-game basis than their deals with WGN and other over-the-air carries did.

For example, the Cubs and White Sox will receive $750,000 per game for the broadcasts they have on cable in 2019, sources said. The WGN and ABC deals pay around $200,000 per game, sources said.

In the ever changing world of cable TV and with streaming platforms now a key part of new media, the monetization of games has become more difficult to project for sports teams and entertainment companies. The Cubs are still contemplating bringing in a carrier to oversee the production for their own regional network or possibly going it alone by producing and selling their own product. The likes of Disney and NBC Sports as well as other big media companies are interested in a partnership with the Cubs, sources said.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

So will NBCSN be dissolved? I don't understand the comment about the Bulls, Sox and Blackhawks running their "next" RSN. Also, it wouldn't shock me if the Cubs partner with either Disney or AT&T for this venture.

This could have huge implications for the new Cubs network if Amazon ends up taking over the 22 former FOX/Disney RSNs. I'm no expert, but would this presumably solve many of the carriage issues that have plagued the LA and Houston RSNs, if the Cubs decide to link up with Amazon?

Are there still things he wants that he doesn’t own or influence?

Jeff Bezos saved The Expanse, so he can do whatever he wants in my book.

This guy predicts the Cubs partnership with the facilitators of right-wing authoritarianism is expected to be a big success.
