In this market I don't think any team would risk being on the hook for another 4 years at roughly $18M per year. In fact, if it did occur and Hendry didn't pull the trigger it should be a fireable offense.

Obviously he wouldn't.

I still don't think its a big deal. Technically we are still only 5 games out of the wildcard, I don't think Hendry wanted to show he was throwing in the towel, even though he probably should have. Yes, as a Cubs fan I can honestly say I don't want Zambrano on our team the next 4 seasons at 72 million. I would rather spend some of the money on a mentally competent pitching alternative (Halladay via trade or Josh Beckett) and the rest of it on someone who can adequately play 2B or SS like Orlando Hudson. This team is hamstrung by it's future salary commitments. I like Zambrano and would like him to be a Cub. He's just getting paid way to much for his production. That's why Hendry should have let him go if he was claimed, which I'm nearly positive he was not.

Right. And regardless, it would be just a one year deal, so his injury concerns become much less of an issue.
