Hoffpauir will be taking the majority of at bats in the OF when Bradley gets injured. And IMO he is at least as good an offensive player as DeRosa, if not slightly better than him.

Yes it did. The Cubs had and continue to have money constraints, that's what is happening. The Cubs payroll was gonna rise significantly without adding a single player, due to backloaded contracts. The Cubs needed to shed payroll to afford Bradley, it had to happen. The Wood, Marquis, and DeRosa moves were all made in order to allow the Cubs to sign Bradley and to help ease the rising payroll from the players already signed. The Cubs(Piniella) also wanted to get more lefthanded, and 2B was the only spot where that was gonna be possible. There was zero % chance that Bradley and DeRosa were gonna be on this team together, it was never gonna happen, and it's stupid for people to keep acting like it was a legitimate possibility.

$2.5M is 8% of $30M. A drop in the bucket. It didn't make a bit of difference in the Bradley contract.

Really? Fontenot got a whopping 284 plate appearances last year. He already has 92 now. The Cubs wanted him to get the chance to play just about everyday, and he wouldn't have with DeRosa here. I don't know how you're not getting that. DeRosa would've been the starting 2B, just like last year.

If Lou managed the team properly, Fontenot could be the starting 2B when a RHP was on the mound. DeRosa could start at 2B with a LHP on the mound.

DeRosa could also:
- Start in RF when Bradley is out (which appears as if that will be quite often)
- Start at 3B when Ramirez is out
- Start at 2B if Fontenot ever gets hurt
- Start at 1B when Lee needs a break or gets hurt

It could have worked just fine with the makeup of our roster.

But you can't handle a team like that. You can't say, "Hey DeRo, we're going to make Fontenot the starting second baseman against righties, but we know Bradley's going to be out a lot because he's always hurt, so you'll get lots of playing time in RF as well."
He was our starting 2b on a 97 win team. They weren't going to officially platoon him with Fontenot, and you can't <i>assume</i> Bradley is going to be out all that time, even if history would indicate it's likely. It sounds like a fine scenario to us in the fantasy world, but that's not how you manage a team.

DeRosa and Fontenot were on the same team in 2008. One didn't have to leave to make room for the other.

Really? Fontenot got a whopping 284 plate appearances last year. He already has 92 now. The Cubs wanted him to get the chance to play just about everyday, and he wouldn't have with DeRosa here. I don't know how you're not getting that. DeRosa would've been the starting 2B, just like last year.

If Lou managed the team properly, Fontenot could be the starting 2B when a RHP was on the mound. DeRosa could start at 2B with a LHP on the mound.

DeRosa could also:
- Start in RF when Bradley is out (which appears as if that will be quite often)
- Start at 3B when Ramirez is out
- Start at 2B if Fontenot ever gets hurt
- Start at 1B when Lee needs a break or gets hurt

It could have worked just fine with the makeup of our roster.

You can't go by what Hendry had to do after the moves were made because people didn't perform. There is no way Hendry would have got rid of DeRo if money wasn't a concern.
