Believe that the surprises regarding this squad are that: this team was able to beat some good teams when everyone was healthy; now, is losing against bad teams when everyone isn’t healthy; and, aging veterans who aren't producing aren't being replaced by prospects who appear to be capable of providing offense. Regardless of health, the current roster will likely be challenged to consistently score more than 3 runs a game. Starting pitching despite not being at full strength has been a pleasant surprise.

Looking at the offensive production over the first 30 games - Cubs are averaging 5 runs a game which appears great and should be producing better than a 500 record considering pitching and defense are the foundations of this roster. Unfortunately, Cubs have scored 0,1,2 or 3 runs in over half of their games. If you discounted the 6 games that accounted for almost 100 runs, the Cubs have averaged just slightly more over 2 runs a game over the other 24 games which is likely more indicative of this roster's offensive capabilities.
