MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Rios isn't that good and he's expensive. Why on God's green earth would KW snap this guy up? I thought they were having money troubles. Then they add Peavy and Rios for close to $120 mil over the next 4 years.

I think its a great pickup for the Sox. Their weakness is CF and Rios's contract is manageable as a CF. The Sox bought low on a 28 year old who put up an .800ish OPS as a CF last year.

He's way overpaid for his production. His best season was 2007, and he's never really come close to that again. There's a reason why Toronto didn't want to pay him that salary.

Actually some of you Chicago folk may be disappointed with the Sox in the near future. Their OF will be good (Rios, Quentin, Danks?), their IF is solid (Konerko, Getz, Ramirez, Beckham, AJ Pierzidkfndski/Flowers) and they have a really good top 4 and closer.

CFers are usually young and making arbitration amounts or make a lot of money (Beltran, Kosuke, Hunter, Rowand). I think Rios can easily be an 800+ OPS hitter.

Yeah, but he's played about 100 games in CF over his career, most of them in 2008. I'm sure he's an improvement over Podsednik and Wise for them in CF, but he really isn't a true CF. He's still overpaid IMO. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of KW crying poor and then snapping up an overpaid OF.

He is a CFer, it isn't his fault that Vernon Wells has CF on lockdown in Toronto.

That doesn't make him a bargain in this economy. Again, KW is a hypocrite.

I think that it is possible the Sox put a claim on Rios to block him from the Tigers and got stuck with him.

He is good, but not at that price.

That's all I'm saying. He doesn't suck, but at that price the Sox could have gotten more than a player of Rios' caliber in this economic environment, and especially when they are crying poor.

My only point is that they got him for free, IMO he is well worth that.

Sincere question: if he were a free agent today, would he get a contract like he has now? If yes, it was a great move. If not, it wasn't.

I don't think there is a chance he'd get anywhere near those dollars or the years in today's environment.

I don't agree with that logic. Neither the Cubs or Sox have legitimate money issues, so I don't see why it matters that he makes 12 million next year. He is making 6 million this year, I'd say that is worth it.

I don't know if Z or Soriano would get their current contracts as FA, so any team picking them up would be making a bad move? Come on.
