Bourn at 4 year and $48 MM isn't a bad deal.
Not bummed that Cubs didn't sign Bourn but Cubs will most likely sign someone like him for the outfield - an aging - over 30 years old, All Star with diminishing skills - on the road to being competitive and I rather spend $12 MM a year on that type of player than $19 MM.

I think you'd rather take your chances on an aging outfielder who relies less on speed like Bourn and more on power. Hell, look at Soriano who had both when the Cubs signed him. He's averaged 34 HR per 162 games as a Cub. His career average prior to the Cubs signing him was just 36 HR per 162 games, so that's not a major decline from his average (though there is some decline from his peak, albeit nothing compared to the decline in speed). On the other hand, he's averaged 13 SB per 162 games as a Cub as opposed to 36 SB per 162 games prior to becoming a Cub. Generally speaking, speed is going to diminish more quickly with age than power.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

Maybe this is off topic, whatever, but speed has to be the most overrated quality in baseball. I'll take a 20 hr, 30 2b guy over all but the speediest guys in baseball. I was talking to a Braves fan about getting the Upton bros. and they were upset about losing Bourn. Their stance was, "who is going to be the speed guy?" Wha? Who gives a shit.

I'd rather have the pick they'd have lost if they signed Bourn.
Wittenmeyer tweeted Cubs wouldn't sign him because of payroll constraints. Sounds like a load of crap to me. I think they just didn't want him that bad.

Yeah, that's bullshit. An over 30 speed guy with a .750 OPS just isn't worth $12m per, and the FO wasn't going to waste the money and draft pick.

I mean the payroll is pretty low as it is...the money is there they just didn't want to spend it there.

Wow...seems pretty shitty to put Bauer on blast like this instead of just keeping it to yourself.

I dunno. It turns an event I didn't give a shit about to one that I paid attention to for two minutes. That's a win in my book.

I cared, but only because I would have loved for the Cubs to have taken a shot at getting Bauer.
