MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Way to open the ballpark. That whole new era sure worked out, geez. Imagine if they had Pujols...

So far, when you consider all factors, the best move this entire off-season has been the Cubs getting Baker.

It's also, by far, the best Cubs signing this offseason.

And certainly the best in the last couple of days...as well as the best involving a player who's surname begins with "b" and ends with "a-k-e-r."

Kudos. You got my point.

"So far" not good enough of a qualifier for you all?

My point was to take a sarcastic jab at the other moves that are being made, which, by the way, are setting a tone of heavily overpaying for utter crap. The Cubs are simply moderately overpaying for crud. Ergo, Cubs rule, motherfuckers. QED.

Cabrera to sign with Blue Jays - 2 years for a total of $16 MM.

Lots of talent being added to AL East and the Red Sox are saying they will be spending big this offseason. Don't have a clue as to whom they'll pick up but if they expect to have one of the top payrolls again next season, they'll be spending a ton of cash

I still expect the Red Sox and Jays to finish 3rd and 4th next season with bloated payrolls.

So what's the wager? I've got no issues with taking your cash.

Let's wait until the end of the offseason to set the prize. The Red Sox and the rest of the AL East have yet to finalize their rosters.

As currently constructed I wouldn't bet against the Jays, but that's assuming everyone else stands pat. I don't expect that to happen. I still expect the Rays to have the best rotation in the division, and I expect the Yanks to improve theirs. I think Baltimore was a fluke. I'm not dumb enough to set any odds on anything at the moment because I have nothing to base it on, aside from my biased opinion.

Now that I'm a bit more sober, I still wouldn't count on either Sox or Jays being a runner up in the AL East.

Agreed that as constructed, the Rays still have the pitching but I wouldn't be surprised if they deal someone prior to Opening Day. The Yankees are the reigning AL East leaders but their pitching looks weak. They'll be active in the free agent market but as I don't see Greinke going to NY and other starters on the market don't appear that strong.

Boston had a ton of injuries and if management is to be believed they may be spending something around $100 MM in the off season. Management stated that they expect payroll to come in close to what they spent this season $175 MM but have less than $80 MM on players under contract. No clue who Boston will spend their cash on or what trades they have in store but I wouldn't count them out.

Jays added a number of horses so far this offseason to what was a decent team so who knows?

It's a ways till opening day but I wouldn't count either of these teams from making it into the playoffs for 2013.
