What the hell is up with extension craze? What's driving the large number of veteran extensions?
Why aren't the Cubs active with this MLB trend? Yeah, there's no money in operating budget for this season but extension appear to predominantly affect future years not this season. Cubs have a number of players that you would expect that they would like to lock up even if the front office may be interested in trading them so ... Any guesses?

Jason Hammel made the Rangers' roster yesterday.
Today, he has apparently decided to retire.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I could see Rizzo, Hendricks and even Willson signing extensions at some point. Little to no chance KB signs before hitting the open market, BUT the fear of a labor stoppage in 2021 could change things.

Would you want to? I love Javy, he's probably my favorite Cub right now, but I worry about his consistency. I suppose this year may prove a lot in that regard. I agree with you regarding Rizzo signing another extension, along with Hendricks and Contrereas doing one. KB has Boras, so I agree with you there, as well. 5 days until Opening Day.

I'd love to lock Javy up, and he's also my favorite Cub right now, but would imagine the FO will probably want to see one more all-star type season out of him before making any serious offers.
This season is such a critical moment for this team and its core. If things go south, it might be just as likely that some of the above names become trade pieces, not extension candidates.

And deGrom gets an extension - 5 year $137.5 MM with an opt out in after 2022 and a 6th year club option.

Hendricks got extended. New contract keeps him a Cub until 2023, club option for 2024. No word yet on the money. Edit: Rosenthal reports deal is for $55.595 million. Covers Hendricks last arb year and three free agent years. Kid with the proper breakdown... Quote:https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status...9147325440
