MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Quote:But do you think it's the right choice for him to take less money? Is that better for the game or for other players? Can't you make the argument that every player should try to get as much money as possible, within reason? Either Trout is getting paid or Moreno is getting paid...

If it were me, I'd take a pretty big discount to play for a contender, at my peak. We're talking about hundreds of millions, either way. I'd rather have a ring than say, the last 50 million of 430 million fucking dollars.

When do the Cubs lock up one of our own?

Fuck Ricketts so hard if this happens.

My guess is that it's about his wife and family and the community he's been a part of and probably wants to stay being a part of, and a place he wants to raise a family in. And that sure, he wanted to be paid like the best player in the world but also, he wanted to stay there.

I don't know much about the guy but he seems like a pretty solid dude. My guess is that he believes he can go to the playoffs with this team at some point too.

There are a lot of money grubbing a-hole superstars in sports but this guy sure doesn't seem like one of them.

He has an agent to take care of the money grubbing a-hole stuff.

It doesn't feel like it, because it was 10 years ago since the Angels were good, but they had a really nice 8-year stretch from 2002 - 2009. So if they can stop spending 100s of millions of dollars on players like Pujols, there's the potential for them to be good again. At least, based on history...

2002 -- 2nd place, 99 wins, won the World Series

2002- 3rd place

2004 - 1st place

2005 - 1st place

2006 - 2nd place

2007 - 1st place

2008 - 1st place

2009 - 1st place

They made the playoffs 6 out of those 8 years and won the World Series once. It'll be hard for them to do that again with the Astros in their division, but maybe they can do it again with Trout on the roster? If they build back up with their farm and don't spend stupidly? They have some decent players on the roster -- Othani, Simmons, Upton...

I'll just be disappointed if Trout doesn't see more action in the postseason. But I'm not going to lose any sleep over it if he doesn't...

Pujols is "only" under contract for 3 more seasons including this one, so that will be a decent chunk of money that they have available in a few years.

Also, while their division is currently dominated by the Astros, at the time Pujols' contract goes off their books, the Astros may have their window really start to close (just like the Cubs at that point), so that division may open wide up.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

I don't really feel bad either.  He has a choice on where to play, if he chooses to play with a team that doesn't have much on the horizon that's his problem.

I am going to be really fucking irritated if the Brewers sign Kimbrel.

I think the Angels will make the playoffs multiple times over the next decade, think about how fast things change. That division was dominated by the Rangers a few years ago. Windows close and open quickly. They have Jo Adell, a top OF prospect, if he lives up to expectations they could have the best OF in baseball for years to come.

And they supposedly have one of the top pitching prospects in their system (Griffin Canning) as well, with a couple of others a year or 2 away. The Angels play in the 2nd largest media market in the country, and havent exactly been shy about throwing money at their problems when the time is right. I wont shed any tears for their fans or Trout.

Yeah, and they got a huge TV deal recently, so money isn't an issue. Speaking of which, and this is the wrong thread, but I'm still waiting on specifics/projections about what the Cubs TV deal means to them in guaranteed dollars.

I assume that's why they're looking at Kimbrel.

Would assume so. Jeffress' shoulder has been barking too.
