For how many of the 13 years will Harper be the Phillies' DH?

Considering that he's only been at or above 5 WAR once in his career, and his next highest season was at 4.8, and he's averaged around 4 WAR for his career, I'm guessing those projections might be a bit optimistic.

13 years is too much. Trout is a big Philadelphia guy right? I guess they couldn't wait. Or, they think they can sign both? Kind of an exciting time to be a fan of that team with their young talent, but I think it's hard to read this as an amazing signing. Harper is a wild card post shift, he was hitting the mendoza line a lot of last season. Then again, he'll hit more HR in that park. Oh well, glad he's not a Dodger, that had me worried.

Do you believe that Harper turned down a 4 year $180 MM deal from Dodgers?


Boras stated that Harper was seeking a long term deal and current 13 year deal includes no opt outs.

According to Jeff Passan, the deal between MLB and the players is done.  It includes the following:

 

For 2019:

July 31 deadline for all trades

$1 million bonus for HR derby winner & $2.5 million in total prize money (that will actually probably entice players to participate)

An "election day" for the all star game.  They will take the top 3 vote-getters at each position and have a single day election to pick the starter.

 

For 2020:

Three-batter minimum for pitchers (as I understand it, this would not apply if an inning ended)

Roster size increase from 25 to 26

September roster size decrease from 40 to 28

Possible restriction on number of pitchers on a roster.

Some limitations on position players pitching.

 

Most importantly, even though the CBA does not expire until after the 2021 season, they will begin working on economic issues now, rather than waiting until shortly before expiration.

A few other changes.

 

For 2019:  Mound visits will be reduced from 6 to 5.  Inning breaks will be 2 minutes (down from 2:05 for local games and 2:25 for national games).

 

For 2020:  Pitchers who are either optioned or placed on the injured list will be out for a minimum of 15 days instead of 10 (apparently not so for position players).  Along with increase to 26-man rosters, it will be 27 for doubleheaders.

I don't really have any issues with any of the above, except maybe the 3 batter minimum rule. Loogies could go extinct. Will also be interesting to see if any of the nuttier Atlantic league experiments will become a reality within the next CBA.

Sounds like the players didn't agree to the 3 batter minimum (why would they) and the league is implementing it unilaterally.

On the HR Derby, they better actually enforce the rules if it's for money. Schwarbs wouldn't have been so cool about the end of last year's if it cost him a million bucks.
