MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Chief Wahoo won't be on the Indians' uniforms going forward.

About fucking time.

Also...a bunch of people are pissed about it, of course.

I've adopted the Indians as my AL team since moving out to Ohio. I bought a cursive "I" hat, because fuck Chief Wahoo. This is long overdue.

That being said, I'd prefer they drop the "Indians" nickname altogether.

It's obvious to anyone who isn't a MAGA shithead that this needs to happen.  They should probably just rename the team because that block C they use as their primary logo sucks.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

It never ceases to amaze me how willing the average baseball fan is willing to blame player/agent greed for work stoppages or, in this case, the slow offseason. It's frightening how many people accept teams mitigating costs as a natural course of action, yet they see players seeking the best payday as avarice. I know that salary envy and team loyalty are mitigating factors, but goddamn.

Also, how MLBTradeRumors poll simultaneously admits that the slow offseason is likely attributable to many factors, but attempts to be reductive at the same damn time:

Quote:Before we get too deep into the gravity of a situation that could still feasibly resolve itself ahead of spring training, let’s begin by rejecting the idea that just one factor is at play in this undertaking. The historic circumstances before us are likely due to a convergence of contributing powers (though one could feasibly make a case that the symptoms all stem from one singular disease). But as ever, we only know a laughable percentage of the information buried deep within the offices of ballclubs, player agents and the MLBPA. With that in mind, it might be more rational for us all to examine the individual catalysts on the surface rather than develop conspiracy theories about how they might all be interwoven.

I mean, pointing to multiple factors is the sane, nuanced approach, some some fucking Pepe Silvia situation that they make such a conclusion out to be.

I know, I know, who gives a shit. I'm just grumpy, I guess. This is the first offseason I can dully enjoy in a long time, and I'm getting bubkes

Yeah, sorry, but retiring Wahoo is not enough. No one even calls native Americans Indians anymore, so the franchise needs to be rebranded. It should have happened decades ago.

I'm not a trademark lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that's bullshit.  Yes, if they completely stopped using the trademark, it could be deemed abandoned and somebody else could use it.  But there's no requirement that they sell merchandise with it.

Interesting. Still seems odd that the team will continue to sell merch with Wahoo on it, just not through MLB.com. They lose all credibility for their supposed principled decision.
