Marketing inferior products?

Somehow football is way more popular than baseball, but it can't be because there's "more action" in football. Football is a four hour broadcast with like 10 minutes of actual stuff happening in between breaks. With baseball, it's similar -- bursts of action. But at least you can argue that there's some drama in nearly every pitch (at least in close games where one swing can change the outcome). I'm not sure what baseball is doing wrong. Is it bad marketing? Does it start with getting younger kids involved in the game earlier? Where's the failure taking place?

To me, there's way more action in professional football than baseball - the stillness of baseball is a game unto itself. There's a rhythm to it that fans love but I get why it bores the hell out of a lot of people. It's hard not to feel guilty watching football knowing everything we know now but that's a whole other thing.
Per your suggestions, if lowering the mound creates less of a s/o - hr dynamic then I'm all for it. The game has way too many s/o and not enough balls in play and that's not attracting fans for sure. I'd love to see the shift outlawed too.

It's hard not to feel guilty watching football knowing everything we know now but that's a whole other thing. From Forbes: The average amount of actual action in an NFL game has been calculated to be between 11 and 15 minutes. The other three hours or so are covered by replays, advertisements, color commentary, advertisements, huddles for the next play, and then more advertisements. Baseball is similar. Lots of breaks in the action and lots of standing around. WSJ estimated 18 minutes of "action" in an average 3-hour baseball game. So it's basically the same. Both sports have bursts of action. Neither of which is a large percentage of time spent watching the game. But there's definitely a perception that football has more action. I don't know what that tells me. Is the NFL marketed better? Is it the violence in football that makes it feel more exciting/intense? I honestly don't know. But I do know that MLB needs to make some changes.

Read previous post’s “action” as gambling but it still works. Gamblers will intensely watch their games of chance. Football has significantly more gambling than baseball so those gamblers will increase TV viewership.

I've gone to several football games. It's not a great live experience. Excruciating even. But as a media product it's something else. If it wasn't for TV production and commercials in between the breaks, it would be unwatchable. And I love soccer and basketball, but most of the "action" consists of passing a ball around and monotonous movements. Are free throws exciting? Layups? Throw-ins? Constant fouls and guys standing around arguing with referees? Nope. It's mostly marketing.

Interesting Butch, I would never have thought that.
I don't watch sports live so I guess I'm fast-forwarding everything that's not "action." I couldn't watch any other way these days, I just don't have the time to dedicate watching anything live.

I'm not sure how many Cubs games I'll be watching from beginning to end this year. If I end up at Wrigley at all, then those games obviously. But I'm getting the feeling this team might be painful to watch. So I'll be watching highlight reels on the MLB at bat app most of the season, I imagine.

Quote:Yes
I mean any elaboration, or is it just as simple as you thinking the products are inferior lol?

Quote:Look 3 posts up. But mostly just my opinion.Yeah, i'm with you. I find good European soccer entertaining to watch, but I get it. I haven't had an interest in watching basketball in twenty years.

Damn, good for him. Dodgers or Yanks will have him by year 6.

The 2024 offseaaom trade rumors involving both Machado and Tatis are going to be a lot of fun.
