I don't believe the new Padres ownership group intends to deal Peavy anyway.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

From what I read today,they wont take over until Feb. 2010 so I'm not giving up my small glimmer of hope that a deal can get done once the Cubs ownership gets settled.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
That sounds about right. All these predictions of SD transferring ownership in 3 months are loony at best.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Moorad's group is expected to have influence in personnel decisions by mid-season, but not sooner.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Yes but the entire reason the current owner wanted to cut payroll and thus deal Peavy was due to financial obligations stemming from a messy divorce. That all goes away with him now standing to make hundreds of millions on the sale of the team.

Obviously there is always a chance but it's far less likely he gets dealt now.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Less likely, sure, but ask Peavy if he wants to wait around for the rebuilding process to bear fruit. They aren't close to winning, not now or in the next couple seasons unless the front office cleans house and restocks the farm system. It's really difficult to tell a player that he is going to be dealt, get 90% into a rebuilding process, change course again, and then act as though the front office is going to turn things around like they once were and maintain a competitive payroll. Keeping Peavy around, whether the new owner can afford to or not, doesn't help their bottom line or convince the fans that it's a good investment to buy season tickets. It would make very little sense to hold onto him now as a token gesture. They need to finish what they started.

Padres resigned Prior to a minor league, non-guaranteed contract. He'll make $1m if he makes the major league roster at any point in the season, and if recent history is any indication, there's little chance of that happening.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Several e-mailers have pointed out that Andruw Jones is in attendance at the Duke-Georgia Tech men's basketball game and is wearing an Altanta Braves hat. Interesting, eh?

According to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, the Dodgers are expected to officialy release Andruw Jones Thursday morning.

Jones, you'll remember, agreed to defer the $21.1MM remaining on his contract back in early January to open up payroll for the Dodgers, and for a chance at a fresh start with a new team. The Dodgers have reportedly discussed a few potential trades this week, but all talks have apparently fallen flat. He has expressed interest in returning to the Braves.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well it wasn't a free agent deal, they are just taking care of arbitration years all at once so they don't have to do it every year. Still if he stays healthy he surely would have made more had he gone year to year, but this is his first year making more than like 400K, so its probably nice for him to know he is set for life now no matter what.

That's true, but he's worth more. Howard won $10M in the Arb, so I take it the Phillies aren't keen on going through that again.

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Edwin Encarnacion and David Weathers filed for arbitration. Jocketty said in both cases the Reds are talking one-year deals at this point.

As far as free agents, Jocketty said the Reds are looking at adding bench players at this point.

As for Bobby Abreu?

"I talked to his agent," Jocketty said. "I don't think there's going to be a fit."

Ben Sheets and Oliver Perez, two guys who would fit nicely into the Reds rotation, remain available as well. The Reds are unlikely to take a chance on either.

"Probably not," Jocketty said. "They're still looking for big dollar contracts."

Jocketty said the free agents market is as quiet as it appears to be.

"Talking to other teams, everyone's waiting," he said. "Times are tight with the economy. Everybody's being very cautious. Things have been slow with season-ticket and advertising renewals."

Those big dollar demands could change as spring training nears.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->NEW YORK -- Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard asked for $18 million in salary arbitration Tuesday, the third-highest figure submitted since the process began in 1974.

Philadelphia offered $14 million to the 2006 NL MVP, a raise of $4 million. Howard hit 48 homers and had 146 RBIs last year, helping the Phillies win their first World Series title since 1980.

Houston pitcher Roger Clemens set the record for highest request in arbitration at $22 million in 2005. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is second at $18.5 million in 2001.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo-->QUOTE <!--quotec-->Jeff Kent, who built a strong Hall of Fame case while setting the Major League Baseball record for career home runs by a second baseman, will formally announce his retirement Thursday at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers said.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Should be a Hall of Famer.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.
