MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Wow. And I thought the Ricketts were in a tough spot with the whole rooftop fiasco.

Quick season ticket holder question. When the dude said he "wouldn't be paying for the second season of his package"...what exactly does that mean? That he wouldn't be renewing his season tickets for the next season?

That's how I interpreted it. Must have signed a multi-year contract, but the Marlins changed the terms.

Ah, that answers my next question: Since when is not renewing your ticket package a suable offense? I didn't realize a multiyear agreement was in play here.

Wonder if the season ticket holders can counter sue for the Marlins not living up to their end of the contract?

Obviously I haven't seen the contract that was signed, but my guess is that the contract said something to the effect that any of the perks being described would be subject to change or elimination at the Marlins' discretion.  It doesn't mean that the Marlins didn't totally screw the ticket buyers, but it could mean that the fans would not be able to defend themselves by saying the Marlins breached the contract first.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

The Marlins seem to be more than happy to court the sort of toxic public relations that normally one would expect they'd be more than happy to eat the cost of those packages in order to avoid.

This is my kind of soap opera.

And I've witnessed that team win two World Series trophies. What a fucking joke.

I wouldn't doubt the Marlin's are legally correct, but the price it's going to cost them, it hardly seems worth the bother.  Are they really bent about, let's say, $10-15K?  Couldn't it have been handled very differently with just conversation?

Cards acquire future Cub killer, PED suspect. Where do they find these guys?

Quote:Cardinals Acquire Jose Martinez

MLB Trade Rumors / by Jeff Todd / 7min ago

The Cardinals have acquired outfielder Jose Martinez from the Royals, per an announcement from the St. Louis club. Cash considerations will go back to Kansas City in the deal.

Martinez, 27, was designated recently. He's a ten-year minor-league veteran who has yet to crack the majors. In parts of two seasons at Triple-A, Martinez owns a productive .359/.431/.525 batting line over 556 plate appearances. He hasn't quite maintained the pace he set last year at Omaha, but will nevertheless provide the Cards some outfield depth in the upper levels of their system.

It's just refreshing to see a last name like Martinez on their roster for a change.

Those door ushers cost a billionaire some serious dough, though.

That would be a shame.
Quote:D-Backs mulling optioning Shelby Miller to the minors

Diamondbacks starter Shelby Miller continued to struggle on Tuesday, serving up six runs on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts over five innings against the Pirates. His ERA, in 10 starts this season, stands at an unsightly 7.09 with 30 strikeouts and 29 walks in 45 2/3 innings.

The D-Backs acquired him from the Braves over the winter, sending 2015 first overall pick Dansby Swanson to Atlanta along with pitching prospect Aaron Blair and outfielder Ender Inciarte. It's a trade they'd most likely take back if they had the luxury.

Instead, GM Dave Stewart is considering optioning the right-hander to Triple-A Reno to figure things out, Jack Magruder reports for Todays Knuckleball. Stewart said, We want to get him on track the best way we can. We will figure it out and do what's needed.

Miller is currently slated to start against the Padres on Sunday, so the club has a few more days to consider what to do. Josh Collmenter will likely be activated over the weekend, which would create a convenient way to put him back on the roster and deal with Miller.

I still don't understand that trade by Arizona.

AZ gave up a little too much, but no one would have thought Miller would pitch this poorly.  The previous 3 years he's had era's of 3.06, 3.74, 3.02 putting in, on average, 185 IP per season.  Plus he's still really young (he'll be 25 this entire season).  I would consider him to be a very good #3 or a decent #2.  Given his age, I don't think it was out of line for AZ to give up some players for him.  Trading Swanson so early in his career was either a mistake or they know something Atlanta does not.

It's easy to complain about the trade with how Miller has pitched, but given Miller's age and track record, I don't think AZ made a terrible trade on its face.  Time will tell.

*** Edit ***

Just took a look at the full trade.  Yes, that was a brutal trade even if Miller pitched up to his capabilities.  He's under team control for another 3 years, but the talent they surrendered for Miller and a decent middle reliever who is in Low A ball, is ridiculous.

AZ thought by adding Greinke and Miller, they would be legit contenders. That wasn't a crazy thought at all. I think everyone thought the trade was crazy lopsided, but I think everyone also thought this would make them favorites in the NL West (or at least on the same level as the Giants and Dodgers).

I know they thought that those two guys would put them over the top and they never though Pollock would get hurt.  But, trading a guy that you just drafted 1st overall seems crazy.  Especially when he hadn't shown anything to that point to make you think it was a bad pick.  Swanson was good in Short Season A last year and he has continued this year and has been promoted to AA.  I won't be surprised to see him in ATL in the 2nd half.  The guy has more BB's than K's so far in his career.  That's pretty impressive, I don't care who you are.  He's a SS with a almost .900 OPS so far in the minors.  Not sure how you trade that away.

But, good for the D-Backs.  They've tied themselves into a huge contract with Greinke and are getting shit from Miller.  Let them struggle.
