MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Quote:That's definitely true on the position player side of things, as guys like Piscotty and Grichuk have been inconsistent, and in some stretches terrible, although I would add that DeJong and Wong had really good seasons. In terms of young pitching though, Alex Reyes would have been a huge factor during this season had he not succumbed to TJS. They also have to be encouraged by what they saw from Weaver and Alcantara in limited time. They also have money to spend to fill holes at 1B/3B if the right deal comes along. They aren't going away.

I completely forgot about Reyes. Dammit.

Wong was complete trash for an entire season. I'll believe he's good if he keeps it up next year. I'm not buying DeJong yet, either.

I just think the landscape has changed and they aren't the organization they used to be. And neither are the Cubs. I'm not saying they're going to be terrible going forward or they won't ever be a factor again, but they just don't really scare me all that much anymore.

Wong has been extremely inconsistent and we really don't know what they have in Reyes.  The possibility is there, but it's far from a sure thing.

They don't really scare me right now either, but my main point is that they still have plenty of talent and a healthy minor league organization with ample resources to tap into to fill holes. It really wouldn't take much for them to take the next step if they added a middle of the order bat like Donaldson. That said, I hope they keep Matheny at the helm for the next decade. He's awful.

Yes. Matheny is brutal. Everyone got fooled when he was the manager for that 100+ win team.

I like Matheny because he has no fun at all.

Did you mean Pham?

No, I meant Wong, who had his best pro season. I don't believe that Pham is a real person.

One good thing about social media is there's proof instead of the old 'he said/she said.'

Sounds like John Farrell won't be returning to Boston next year.

That's a shame.
