It's a flawed system for sure. Of course there is merit in being considered, but it has become more of a popularity contest lately. 

 

What makes Walker a HOFer now and not 9 years ago? How many more hits did he get between now and then? 

 

You're either a HOFer or you're not.

What's changed is that the older baseball writers who don't really follow the sport any longer are gradually becoming ineligible (or dying off). The old school groupthink is slowly being replaced with another form of it, and the younger writers don't seem to care as much about the PED scandals and allegations toward certain players like Walker. It was mostly before their time.
