MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Biggest offensive opportunities for improvement are SS and CF. Those are difficult positions to fill. Cubs have Alcantara and Baez that could internally fill those positions. Alcantara seems to be playing better, but still not excelling at AAA. Baez is hurt. It's a tough decision.

We could go after Jay Bruce. He only has one more year on his contract after this one. But he's a LF or RF solution.

I think the need for a corner OF is greatly reduced with Soler back.  He's going to be given every opportunity in RF - and, in reality, he's been the recipient of horrible luck since he's been back with balls hit right at guys and some really bad called Ks.  As hard as he hits the ball, he should hit for a high BABIP.

I also think Coghlan/Denorfia is actually pretty good as a platoon.  The problem with them is when Soler is out and you end up splitting them up and playing Denorfia too much against RHPs.

The big question seems to me to be CF, but given what they are paying Fowler, it's hard to imagine any significant upgrades in CF.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

If I would've known we'd be 7 games over .500 at the break I would have been over the moon and thought we'd be right there for the division race.  Would have never guessed we'd be a fairly distant 3rd with the top two teams having 2 of the top 3 best records in baseball.  But overall I'm very happy with where we are.

I really don't like the idea of trading for a bat that much.  CF is a problem but I'm still holding out hope Fowler can get back to being at least respectable (still not a great leadoff man though).  Like the Coghlan / Denorfia platoon. If we were to trade for anybody, I would want a SP with some years left, but would much rather wait and sign a top-end guy in the offseason.  I just don't think we're ready to be selling big chunks out of the farm system quite yet.

I also don't expect any significant upgrades to the offense by the deadline, at least not from outside the organization anyway. The FO has pretty much said this as well. I'd love an upgrade in the rotation (Ross/Cashner?) and maybe another bench bat (Zobrist), but have no clue how much those would cost. Not interested in mortgaging the future for rentals given that it's really just a 1 game playoff at stake for us.

Too bad he lost the right to make such a decision when he signed his overpriced contract with a team that was sure to fade based on roster construction.

I'd be pretty bent if one of our players were saying something similar.

Holy fuck, didn't realize how good Greinke has been this year.  Kind of insane.

They're shortening the time for the Derby to try to get it in before the really bad weather hits.

I'm okay with that. One reason I have stopped watching these past few years is it just dragged on too much. Hopefully the new rules at least liven it up a little bit.

I believe I read they also get one timeout, though I don't know how long it's for.
