MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)

I'm not really sure why I'm feeling a little schadenfreude about this.  I love Sandberg.  I guess it's more about the people who wanted Sandberg to be manager for the Cubs just because it would have fulfilled some deranged nostalgia fantasy where all the ex "Cubbies" can lead the team to the world series and get the ring they really deserved when they were playing so it can be 1984 forever and ever.

I think many Cubs fans saw it work in the southside 10 years ago, and were hoping the Cubs could replicate it.

I was one of them who wanted Sandberg, but in hindsight I'm glad things worked out the way they did. I'm not sure Theo pulls the plug on Sandberg to get Maddon...like he did with Renteria.

I don't think Theo passed up Sandberg because he knew he was going to spare the indignity of someday replacing him.  Honestly, I don't think he even hired Sveum or Renteria with that in mind.  Theo didn't hire Sandberg because he flat out sucks as a manager and did not understand Theo's philosophy.

Be thankful we have organizational leaders that think with their brains and not with their hearts
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

I wanted no part of Sandberg at the time both because he was a bad fit for our team AND didn't want him to be embarrassed by managing a shitty old roster. I feel bad for him, and still don't really want him involved in the organization in any baseball role. Maybe 5 years from now he can be a Cubs ambassador of some sort, but otherwise I don't see him as a MLB manager/coach anywhere long-term.

The Pirates DFA'd Chris Volstad. Maybe he is our answer for BOTR starter.

I couldn't even type that with a straight face.

The new HR derby rules are crazy.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

The Sox blew a 4-0 lead through 7 with Shark on the mound and lost to the Tigers 5-4 with a walkoff HR In the 9th. Hawk Harrelson did some of his best silent broadcasting in years. His anger and frustration were palpable. Now I would like a win tonight to be able to enjoy this more.

Sounds like Joey Gallo is getting demoted to make room for Josh Hamilton who comes back off the DL. Remember when he lit up Shark for his debut?

I think that was always the plan, sorta like a Schwarber situation.  Feel bad for Josh Hamilton.  His return to the bigs means a fan favorite young slugger gets sent down.  Meatheads are going to eat him alive.

Quote:Yasiel Puig Reportedly Has Had Multiple Altercations with Dodgers Teammates
Bleacher Report - MLB by Adam Wells  /  21min

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig missed 39 games earlier this season with a hamstring injury, though some of his teammates would have been happy if he hadn't come back at all.

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Speaking to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, one anonymous Dodgers player made his feelings about Puig clear.

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">"We've talked about this," the Dodgers player said. "At this point, it would be addition by subtraction."

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">The same player later added that trading Puig would be a C<span>atch-22 for the franchise because "he's a top-three or -four talent in baseball."</span>

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">In the same article, Passan noted that an upcoming book about the Dodgers written by Molly Knight called The Best Team Money Can Buy offers "<span>anecdote after Puig anecdote that illuminates what makes him so off-putting to so many."</span>

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Here are details of one incident involving Puig and Dodgers right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke that Passan cites from Knight's book:Other instances mentioned Puig being scolded by Skip Schumaker once for showing up to the park 20 minutes late and when he engaged in a relationship with the daughter of a minor league coach.

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="margin-left:40px;">"In 2014, during the Dodgers' annual trip to Chicago, the team bus stopped downtown to allow rookies undergoing hazing to walk into a pizza place and emerge with food for the veterans. Some Dodgers players, not wanting to wait, skipped off the bus. When the bus was ready to leave, Puig was outside, looking for his luggage inside of the bay underneath the bus. After Puig ignored multiple requests to close the luggage bay, Greinke hopped off the bus, grabbed the suitcase in front of Puig and chucked it onto Michigan Avenue. Puig stepped toward Greinke and was restrained by reliever J.P. Howell."

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Passan wrote that those previous problems with Puig have not convinced the Dodgers brass that they go beyond "occasional annoyance."

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Puig's attitude and antics have long been a source of controversy since he debuted for the Dodgers in June 2013. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly benched him in the fifth inning of a game against the Chicago Cubs as a rookie when Puig threw a bat and sulked following a strikeout.

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">In 2014, Puig was benched for the Dodgers' home opener for showing up late to Dodger Stadium.

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Things have been quiet around Puig, at least publicly, this season. Some of that could be due to the fact he's only played 31 games, though he's also quoted in the book as saying during a meeting last year, "You guys tell me how you want me to play."

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">As the player said, Puig is one of the best raw talents in baseball. He made the All-Star team last year and is hitting .289/.382/.465 so far this season. His .847 OPS is second among Los Angeles outfielders, behind rookie Joc Pederson (.913).

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(51,51,50);font-family:'Slab Serif', sans-serif;font-size:15px;">At 24 years old, Puig has proved himself to be an exceptional talent. He's also signed through 2018, so the Dodgers have every incentive to work with the Cuban star to hope he doesn't become a bigger problem as the franchise tries to win a championship.

Is there anyone on the Angels roster that we want?
Quote:Jerry Dipoto Likely Out As Angels GM

MLB Trade Rumors / by Charlie Wilmoth / 4 hours ago

Angels players believe Jerry Dipoto is out as the Angels GM, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports tweets, and ESPNs Jerry Crasnick quotes a source within the game who says that Dipoto is definitely out (via Twitter). The team has yet to make any move official, and what might have happened isnt yet entirely clear, but various writers late reported news similar to Passan and Crasnick's Tuesday night, painting a fairly consistent picture.

MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reported that Dipoto was considering resigning in the wake of the Angels organizational tensions. FOX Sports Ken Rosenthal, meanwhile, tweeted that two sources told him Dipoto had packed up his office (though he noted the possibility that Dipoto might simply have been acting out of emotion). Crasnick tweeted that strife between Dipoto and manager Mike Scioscia had only increased since Rosenthal reported earlier this week that the two again werent getting along (after having also had significant disagreements in 2012). Crasnick also indicated that Dipoto approached Angels owner Arte Moreno with an ultimatum that backfired.

Mike Trout?

If we could get Pujols for league minimum with the Angels paying the rest of his salary, so he could finish his career on the Cubs bench, I'd consider it...just for the comedy.

Bleh.

I remember when Dipoto was considered the hot shit GM after all those signings a few years ago.  Interesting how things change.
