Overpaid for Lincecum? Yes, but not by a lot.
So, based on this years 1.6 WAR, $10M / WAR isn't a lot?

</div>
</blockquote>
Based on that, yes. However, he is expected to perform better based on numbers from this past season. Lincecum's xFIP, xFIP-, SIERA, etc are right there with Latos, CC, Gio Gonzalez, (depending which stat you look at). Would you give any of those guys $35mil/2 years? I would and not think twice. Would I give it to Lincecum? No, but considering he would likely get more on an open market...$17.5mil isn't THAT far off how much I would've given him per season.

Latos only makes: 2013: $4.2M, 2014: $7.2M (2.9 WAR at signing)

Gio Gonzalea : 2012: $3.2M, 2013: $6.2M, 2014: $8.5M, 2015: $11M, 2016: $12M (3.3 WAR at signing)

CC: 2012: $23M, 2013: $23M, 2014: $23M, 2015: $23M, 2016: $25M (6.5 WAR at signing)

Tim Lincecum: average of 2014: $17M 2015: $17M (1.6 WAR at signing)

Gio signed his before the 2012 season, in which he won 21 games. Latos signed to avoid arbitration. No way do those guys get that little on the open market in 2013 off-season.

Overpaying Lincecum on a 2-year deal > Passing up on him and getting torched when he goes to a rival.

It's a risk you take, IMO, as long as it's just a 2-year deal. If he fails, then hey, you effectively paid him a giant thank you bonus for having him help win 2 titles and a 2 Cy Young awards. If it works, then you paid just under market value for the pitcher with arguably the highest ceiling in baseball. When you've won a couple of titles over the last few years, you can afford to take that risk.

I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

I had typed up a better response earlier. I guess it didn't go through. I'm not at a computer now so the just of it was. Gio had a higher WAR and W/L records for a pitcher don't matter. The only thing that says is when he pitched, his team plated more runs than the opposition. It doesn't say how well he pitched.

That's fair. However, I still don't believe that those guys would get the same contracts if they were looking to re-sign/hit the open market this off-season. 2/$35mil for Lincecum overpriced NOW? Yes. Would I do the same deal for a guy like CC, Holland, Latos, Gio? HELL yes. Destined said it best.

The Phillies are bringing back Marlon Byrd on a 2-year deal. My guess is this will be a mistake.

I still can't figure out how a man with the arms of a professional wrestler hits nothing but ground balls to the shortstop.

Not to mention his inexplicably non-existent OF throwing arm. Some people forget this guy was out of baseball just one year ago.

Apparently the deal is 2 years, $16m. Didn't we pay him less than that over 3 years? And he sucked for 2 of those years.

 Well, he was really good for the Pirates for 30 games.

That's an absurd contract for Byrd. I fully expect him to miss at least half of it with a failed drug test.

This. Exactly this.

He lays out coming in for straight away fly balls and it's amazing. It's AMAZING!

Prince for Kinsler.

Makes sense Castellanos to 3B shift Cabrera back to 1B.  Profar can move to 2nd and you can leave Andrus at SS now.

Not surprised by this at all, but it's funny that the reasons for trading Fielder were the same ones used by other teams that passed on him in the first place.
