Pena is 3 years younger, a better first baseman, and Berkman was bad for the Yankees last year. He also got 8 million, so it isn't like he was a huge bargain compared to Pena, plus he's been injured the last 2 years.
I also don't know where you get the notion that Hendry hates OBP.

The only thing Berkman hates more than Wrigley field, is playing baseball games at Wrigley field. He has been quoted several times on his disdain for Wrigley. Just because a GM wants someone, does not mean that person wants to be there.
The more I watch Pena, the more I see that he was just a $10 million investment in Starling Casto's confidence.

Berkman's OPS+, (a relatively all-inclusive "hitting" stat), for his career, is the same as A-Rod's. So yeah, he's hit the ball and got on base at a superior level.
He won't get into the Hall because of his lack of a great peak, his merely decent all-around play, and his position. But he can get on base at a good clip; here are similar players on the all-time OBP list:
Jackie Robinson .408
Joe DiMaggio .398
Manny Ramirez .410
Rickey Henderson .401
So yeah, Berkman's .408 is in a high class of hitters, IMO.
As Savant says, Berkman has had some disdain for Wrigley.
So did Edmonds. Money talks, however (the Cliff Lee anomaly notwithstanding).
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

Edmonds was hated, and hated the Cubs, but I don't remember him ever complaining about hitting in Wrigley. Berkman is a contact wearer, and hates the wind.

You may be right. Cub's pitchers have had excellent success against Berkman, especially at Wrigley.

I just assumed it was his arm or shoulder. Whatever I still doubt he pitches very long at the major league level, if he makes it back at all.

I hear ya, but I really want him to make it. He actually can be a serviceable arm in a big league bullpen I feel, unlike Chad Fox.

DiMaggio's obp was based mostly on his average. Didn't take many walks. He should be removed from the HOF.
