If Wells was a free agent today, he would not get a 4 year, $85 million contract. He might not get 4 years and $40 million.

I'll agree with that. But, ultimately, if it does little to hamper future moves, what difference does it really make? Until fans stop paying for these contracts (I mean, let's face it, $20 million for a baseball player is fucked up), it matters little. How badly did the Dreifort contract--considered one of the worst of all time--really hurt the Dodgers, in the long and short runs?

I'll agree with that. But, ultimately, if it does little to hamper future moves, what difference does it really make? Until fans stop paying for these contracts (I mean, let's face it, $20 million for a baseball player is fucked up), it matters little. I don't know what the Angels' budget is this year or will be over the next few years, but it's not inconceivable that having an extra $20 million on the books will restrict future moves. It would for the Cubs.

Which is ridiculous with his bat. .831 career OPS, 20+ homers in each of the last 3 years, etc. He was 9th in the AL in homers/at bat last year. Get him somewhere where he can DH only and just focus on his bat, and he might hit 40.

That's the thing with Napoli...he simply sucks as a catcher, and nobody wants him to be their backstop.

But what Clapp said makes great sense: just based on pure offense, he'd be a major improvement to many AL team's DH problem.
