MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Yep, let the bidding for Lilly begin!
QUOTE 4:31pm: The Mariners also get right-hander Josh Lueke and second baseman Matthew Lawson, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Multiple other reports confirm that the Mariners obtain Lueke, Lawson, Beavan and Smoak for Lowe, Lee and cash.

4:20pm: The Mariners will acquire two pitchers and a position player, plus Smoak, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan says 21-year-old righty Blake Beavan is also in the trade (Twitter link). Baseball America ranked the 2007 first rounder 17th among Rangers prospects before the season.

3:57pm: The Rangers will acquire Lee and Mark Lowe for Justin Smoak and three others, according to Sherman (via Twitter). Lowe will miss the rest of the season with back surgery, so his inclusion in the trade is puzzling. Rosenthal confirms that the Rangers are acquiring Lee and says the Mariners are sending cash (Twitter link). Olney reports that the Mariners are sending $2.5MM to the Rangers (Twitter link).

I hadn't realized that he was tearing it up in Japan.
QUOTE # Hanshin is saying they’re going to keep both Craig Brazell (30 HR) and Matt Murton (.351 AVG) for 2011. Brazell will be a free agent and figures to get a hefty raise from the $800k he’s earning, while Murton, according to the linked article, has a second year on his contract which is structured as a buyout. I’ve seen this referred to in other articles as an option, which I guess is functionally similar. Either way, the team gets to choose whether to keep him in 2011, though a buyout suggests there is a payment attached if they don’t. That would seem to make it even more of a no-brainer.
# Speaking of Murton, he and Kenji Johjima visited the Osaka University Children’s Hospital on their off-day Monday.

We should have never gotten rid of him.

Yes, especially with our need for a 2B in 2011 and beyond.

Is he playing every day? That seems to be the key with him, especially since he's now in his prime (28 y old, I think). We played him every day when he was 24, and he was perfectly average for an MLBer.

He never hit for much power though, which isn't good for an OFer. Biggest calfs I've ever seen on a human being (I saw him in AAA). Bizzaro career...he'll come back to MBL (I'm guessing) after his prime.
Typical Cub story.
There's nothing better than to realize that the good things about youth don't end with youth itself. It's a matter of realizing that life can be renewed every day you get out of bed without baggage. It's tough to get there, but it's better than the dark thoughts. -Lance

BLUE JAYS have acquired ESCOBAR and JO-JO REYES from Braves in exchange for ALEX GONZALEZ, TIM COLLINS & INF TYLER PASTRONICKY.

Surprised the Braves would trade Yunel, but he does seem like a dick.

Ultimate dick. He mixed it up with Lilly a couple years ago, or was trying to during a cubs braves skirmish after they went head hunting on Soriano. Was down near the field at that game, Lilly called him a fucking pussy and I loved it.

And he flexes and stretches facing the fans down near the field, almost like, "look at me, my name is yunel and I have frosted tips. I am special and the best player ever."

Cock sucker.

Best flopper in the league though.

That might help the Braves defense, but otherwise I'm not sure what it does for them. Gonzalez is producing but he's never been much of an offensive player, and appears to be having a career year. Are these minor leaguers any good?

QUOTE (MLBTR)Collins, a 20-year-old lefty, was ranked 19th among Blue Jays prospects by Baseball America heading into this season. The 5'7" southpaw "gets outs with a solid fastball that tops out at 93 mph and a true 12-to-6 curveball that he spins really well." Working in relief, Collins has a 15.3 K/9 in 43 Double A innings this year. Pastornicky, a 20-year-old shortstop, was ranked 17th. He's described as a player who "doesn't have flashy tools but gets the most out of what he has." In the best case, he'll become a line drive top of the order hitter with solid defense, indicates BA.

Interesting they sold low, but the Braves most likely tired of Yunel Varejao's bullshit act. I can't blame them. Not to mention that he's mired in an awful year and they're going for it for Cox's last year. Obviously a "win-now" move.

Yunel is one of the biggest douchebags in the league... but they couldn't have possibly sold lower on him. I don't like this trade for them, especially thinking long term. When he returns back to form, he's one of the best hitting shortstops in baseball, and he's still just 27.

And there's not many better hitters with runners in scoring position than Yunel. From 07-09, he batted .337 with 137 RBI in 312 at bats with runners in scoring position.

As for Alex Gonzalez, he won't keep hitting for power at this rate. He has a career .403 slugging percentage, and is currently slugging .497. He's hitting a homer every 19 at bats, when over his career he hits one every 36 at bats. And even with his great power, he has only a .301 on-base percentage, 35 points lower than Yunel's.

I just watched Alcides Escobar pull a Cedeno and overslide the bag on a stolen base. Guess who tagged him out?

The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.
