MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
I think our future success depends a lot on whether we can clear some payroll in the near term. We aren't competing this year or next, so we should do what we can to eliminate salary and prepare for 2012.

Wrong. We're clearing about 25 million in payroll before arbitration raises.

Actually, I did figure in arbitration raises when I came up with that number, but I figured on 24 million instead. Here's the post I got the numbers from.

Also, Cot's Baseball Contracts shows that our solid contractual commitments in 2011 totals about $104 million, and that's assuming we do pick up Samardzija's option next year.

So you're saying we're competing this year and next? I understand what we're clearing. We're dropping even more after 2011 and 2012. If we could get down to 85 million in obligations we'd be in a position to trade for a stud. There aren't many teams looking to add payroll though so I think it's going to be difficult to trade any of ours.

If Jackson keeps up what he's doing, we are going to have a very crowded OF situation by 2011.

I processed that differently in my head than what it actually says. For some reason I thought you said we had to try to clear payroll to be able to get any financial relief.

I don't understand why we aren't in a position to trade for a stud in 2011. I think we have what it takes to get Adrian Gonzalez. If we trade for him and sign him to a long term deal, I would love it. A contract approaching 20mill a year won't cripple this team as long as that contract isn't 10 years in length. I'm thinking he would expect a $20 mill per year over 6 years come his contract year. If we trade for him in the offseason and negotiate the contract early (he only makes 5.5 million next year) , I figure we could spread that money out for the duration of 7 years which would be about $15 mill a year starting next year. We would have a left handed slugging 1st baseman that plays good defense for the next 7 years, 5 of which will be in his prime. That's exactly what this team needs. I could be under estimating what kind of contract he will want though. If we can get him signed before Pujols signs his contract, I think it will be reasonable.

I don't think Jackson will be with the big league club next year unless it's a September call up. I think by 2012, if Colvin pans out we could have an outfield of Soriano, Jackson, Colvin with Byrd as the 4th outfielder.

Yeah, I should have said sometime in 2011. I don't expect Jackson to be fighting for a ML job in ST unless Colvin blows his chance and we have no other options at that point.

Man...I'm amazed at how many people are sold on Colvin.

Soriano will be 47 years old in 2012. I think he'll be the fourth OFer.

I'm not sold either, but what other choice do we have at this point if we decide to go young?

Oh, I don't have any problem giving him more playing time at this point. I'm just not so sure he's going to amount to shit.

Neither am I. Unless I'm mistaken I don't think anyone around here expects Colvin to keep up his current production over 500 ABs, but I hope I'm wrong.

At this point in the year, has Tyco shown us more than Jake Fox did last year or Micah Hoffpauir did the previous year?
