Surprised by the snail's pace proceedings of hot stove league.

Things never pick up until the Winter meetings. People seem awfully anxious for things to happen this year.

Especially when its pretty clear that both Ohtani and Stanton are holding up the pitching and position player markets respectively. Nothing significant will get done until either situation is resolved.

Throw in Boras representing a fairly significant number of the big names free agents contributes to the slow developing free agent market.

And now Passan throws out a few more theories as to why this offseason has been so slow to develop.

Passan makes some interesting points but would rather be discussing moves rather than guessing why clubs aren't making moves.
Agree that clubs are more excited about the 2018-2019 free agency class than the 2017-2018 class but doubt that this offseason is slow to develop as clubs are actively robbing the 2018 season budgets to potentially pay for the 2019 season. Haven't other clubs heard Ricketts dictate that every season is sacred. Agree that coaching moves have had an impact. Hell, the Yankees don't currently have a manager so guessing their front office might be spending a bit of time on finding one while sorting through free agent moves.

So we can offer Ohtani 300 K signing bonus and the Yankees can better that by more than 3 mil?
Wow. That kinda sucks ass.
11-29-2017, 05:11 PM
Yes, but the bonus will not dictate where he ends up. He can make several million $$s per year in endorsement deals, maybe $20 million depending on the market. Besides that, and if his little homework assignment is any indication of where his head is at, his decision will come down to the city, team fit, organizational culture and other non-baseball opportunities that could present themselves. $3 million will not be the deciding factor in this situation. All that said, the Yankees, Dodgers and Seattle are clearly the front-runners.

Has Aaron Boone ever managed before? What an odd choice.
