I was floored when I saw this. He might have rubbed some folks the wrong way, but he clearly loved being here and just Fucking playing the game of baseball. Such a tragedy.

So, this happened tonight. Gordon was noticeably emotional about Fernandez yesterday. And today . . .

The Dodgers are within a game of the Nats for the #2 seed with 6 to play and the Dodgers hold the tiebreaker.
#2 seed WSH --- (Magic # = 6) LAD -1.0 (Magic # = 7) For the Wild Card, in the event of a 2-way tie for the 2 WC spots, both the Mets & Cardinals hold the tiebreaker over the Giants. The Mets and Cardinals tied for their season series, but if they finish tied for the season, it is highly likely that the Cardinals would win the tiebreaker. A 2-way tie for the 2nd WC spot or a 3-way tie for both spots has to be decided on the field. Because of that, the magic #s below do not take tiebreakers into account Wild Card NYM +0.5 (Magic # vs. SF = 6, vs. STL = 5) SF --- (Magic # vs. NYM = 7, vs. STL = 6) STL -1.0 (Magic # vs. NYM & SF = 8)
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

That would be amazing, but the odds have to be like a billion to one.

Apparently, MLB does not have a procedure in place for a 5-way tie.

Perfect!

4-way is easy. You just do a 2-day, 4-team, single-elimination tournament. Design a 5-team tiebreaker that doesn't take a week.

Sorry if this was discussed somewhere already, but how would a 3-way tie in the NL wild card play out between NY, SF and STL?

Probably* as follows:
Mets @ Cardinals for WC 1 Loser of that game @ Giants for WC 2 WC 2 @ WC 1 to advance to NLDS * - The Cardinals would likely hold the tiebreaker over the Mets for the top "seed" in this scenario, although I don't know if that is yet 100% certain. The Giants would be the 3 "seed" because they had a losing record vs. both other teams.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.
