MLB News & Notes (other than Cubs or Sox)
Heh. Well, I argue that if you linger long enough to recognize such douchiness, you've already been sucked down the Swishhole.

Knowing there is a Swishhole is half the battle.

Also, this is interesting news. Could Cherington's days be numbered?

Wow, that's a strange move.  That doesn't sound good for Cherington.

The Grantland article points out the phenomena to explain the Cardinals good fortune this season - they refer to it as 'cluster luck', we know it as Voodoo Magic.

In 2013 Cardinal's Voodoo Magic was focused on the offensive side of RISP, this year it's the pitching side of RISP - stranding base runners.

I'm interested in seeing how the correlations change if the games against the Cubs were excluded as Cubs are notorious for stranding base runners and have played a disproportional number of games against the Cards.

More interestingly is which of the Voodoo gods will the Cardinals organization sacrifice to next season?

I guess none of us deemed Iwakuma's no-no from yesterday noteworthy? I bring it up mainly because he might be a cheaper pitching FA target in the off-season.

Oh, and fuck the Cardinals.

Iwakuma is 34, no thanks

Right. And they would be signing him to a ten-year deal, right?

Do you really want to pay 10 million plus a year for his age 35 season? Plus, I doubt he signs only a one year contract. So, you're probably looking at 2/20-25, I don't want to pay that kind of money for ages 35 and 36.

Given his track record, I'd be shocked if he signed less than a 3 year deal. Not interested.

I'm sure he won't sign a one-year deal. But I'm also certain that this FO would sign him to deal that they felt was good value. If they can get him for what would be reasonable for a back-end starter for 2-3 years, they might explore it. If not, they won't, any of our interests in Iwakuma notwithstanding.

Chances are that the no-hitter raises the price out of our range, but we'd be fools to assume that the front office won't continue to investigate multiple avenues when building a starting staff. Iwakuma (or his ilk) might fit better overall in the plan compared to a Cueto or Price who will demand long, expensive contracts.

This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.  [Image: ITgoyeg.png]

So how does the money work?  Are they now taking on the rest of his salary or just the league minimum with us picking up the rest?

League minimum, then we get the rest I believe.

Yes.  Same thing next year (if anybody signs him).

Yeah so it'd be about $700,000 total in savings if he signs somewhere next year. Too lazy to do the exact math.
