What do you do though? Require padded rugby helmets? A BP net is out of the question.
I hate my pretentious sounding username too.

So, what's the kill rate for pitchers in the history of the game? One death per how many pitches thrown?
Yeah.

I'm not sure I can point to a reason for it, but there seems to be a lot more pitchers getting it in the head in recent years than in the past. It seems to be happening a few times a year. I remember it happening to Billy Wagner in the late 90s, but I can't remember it happening much before the last few years.
This is not some silly theory that's unsupported and deserves being mocked by photos of Xena.

I always think of Mussina getting drilled in the face, which caused me to stop being a pitcher in little league. Maybe it's advancements in bat speed + pitch speed, so pitchers have had a reduction in reaction time? Spitballing, but there has to be a reason.

Quote:So, what's the kill rate for pitchers in the history of the game? One death per how many pitches thrown?Yeah, that's just it, there's so few injuries considering how many pitches thrown. And yet, it's a horrifying thing to see happen. I go back and forth on it, but I think ultimately it's like say flying, yes, when a plane goes down it's awful, but so few go down. If that makes sense. Now obviously the counter is we have flight safety measures. But I'm not sure what there is that could be done in baseball though, short of helmets with face masks on pitchers, but that's really hard to picture in mlb.

Kaza Ishii got his head blown off by a ball a decade ago.
If Angelo had picked McClellin, I would have been expecting to hear by training camp that kid has stage 4 cancer, is actually 5'2" 142 lbs, is a chick who played in a 7 - 0 defensive scheme who only rotated in on downs which were 3 and 34 yds + so is not expecting to play a down in the NFL until the sex change is complete and she puts on another 100 lbs. + but this is Emery's first pick so he'll get a pass with a bit of questioning. - 1060Ivy

So I guess Sharma has been hired at BP. I like his thoughts and I know he's done some stuff for ESPN, seems odd though cause his strengths seem more in general discussion. I don't really consider him an expert analyst on the minor leagues and prospects.

I like him best in a pita with a side of tabbouleh.

Then again, it's possible his ESPN handlers discouraged him from incorporating too much scary math into his pieces. Their readers aren't exactly scholars.

Yeah, also base it on what I've heard of him on the BN podcast and his twitter though.

Didn't they also hire Mauricio Rubio from Cubs Den not long ago? He isn't exactly a deep analysis guy, but he is still a real good writer. I think BP is just trying to add some diversity of perspective. Should be interesting either way.
