If I remember correctly, he would be comparable to Mitch Atkins. A good pitcher, but never really had high expectations.

Well I don't really have anyway to prove it but he was.

Ohman hasn't started a game in the minors (other than a 1 inning rehab appearance) since 1999. However I do remember him being one of our more highly regarded bullpen prospects for a few years through a couple of injuries.

When he was first brought up, what kind of expectations did people have for him? Are there players in the league right now you could draw comparisons with in terms of expectations?

That's exactly how I remember it.
The thing you need to remember is that all Cardinals fans and all White Sox fans are very bad people. It's a fact that has been scientifically proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. Being a Cubs fan is the only path to rightousness and piousness. Cardinal and White Sox fans exist to be the dark, diabolical forces that oppose us. They are the yin to our yang, the Joker to our Batman, the demon to our angel, the insurgence to our freedom, the oil to our water, the club to our baby seal. Their happiness occurs only in direct conflict with everything that is pure and good in this world.

Right. That is more in line with what I really wanted to say.

Ohman's a fucking douche. He's from my rival high school... plus he's just a fucking douche and looks like he's got a cock stuck in his throat. Oh, and Lou HATES him, so no chance in hell of it happening.

He would have never been brought up if we didn't start a discussion about picking up a 3.6million dollar lefty specialist.

Where did this rumor come from?
I'd like to know the source before wasting time considering if its worth it or not.
A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Ok, I think people are getting are losing sight of what this discussion is about. It's not about Will Ohman being good.
It's about:
Will Ohman > Scott Schoeneweis
However,
3.6million dollars > Will Ohman
Also,
Marquis(9.8mill) > Schoeneweis (3.6mill)
Look, if you don't like the original alternate scenario I laid out how about this. Even if the Mets want to do a straight contract swap (which, if everyone feels it's so hard to move him then they won't), the Cubs will end up saving 6.2 million. However, if the Cubs deal to someone paying off 4-5 million of Marquis deal while getting a decent prospect back, the Cubs would net 4.8-5.8 million.
I personally think a decent prospect is better then Scott Schoeneweis + 600k-1.6 million dollars.

I prefer Schoeneweis over Beimel for a couple reasons.
One, Schoeneweis has only one year left on his deal, while it'll take a multi-year deal to get Beimel. If Schoeneweis sucks, he's gone after this year. If Beimel sucks, we're stuck with him.
Two, over their careers, Schoeneweis holds lefties to a .224 BA and a .594 OPS, while Beimel's career BAA and OPS-against versus lefties are .266 and .722. And this past year, Beimel actually gave up a higher BAA to lefties than he did to righties (OPS-against vs. lefties was .641 though, compared to .700 vs. righties). So Beimel isn't really a LOOGY.
Complaining about Schoeneweis' cost is fine, but I doubt the prospect Marquis would fetch would be worth much, and it might be tough to find a better realistic LOOGY option on the open market than Schoeneweis.
And since Lou is still the manager, Ohman isn't even worth discussing. There's no way they'd bring him back.
