Cubs signing a Japanese Reliever?
#1
Don't think this has been posted:

Takahashi

QUOTE Sports Hochi is reporting that the Cubs are close to a deal with lefthanded pitcher Ken Takahashi. According to Hochi it’s a one-year, major-league deal and the Cubs would look to him to start and pitch in middle relief. The article speculates that the Cubs are looking to bring in someone to support Kosuke Fukudome, but I don’t see the logic in signing another rookie. They might as well bring in Akinori Otsuka or someone that’s been through the league already. Ken Kadokura and Shigeki Noguchi auditioned for the Cubs last month as well.

I wish that I believed in Fate. I wish I didn't sleep so late. I used to be carried in the arms of cheerleaders.

There was talk last week they were going to likely sign 2 and let them compete in ST for jobs, but no guaranteed deals. I don't think this dude would start for us, no way.

He'd have to be damn good to replace Marshall as our #5.

I look back at the Fuk signing and cringe...the White Sox actually made him a better offer, yet he chose us. Wheeee.
Just think, he could be causing heartburn for Hawk and Reinsdorf, and choking their salary structure. And they would never have made the trade for Carlos Quentin if they had landed Fuk.

Just a dark day in Chicago history, IMO.

The next guy on the free agent market to watch is Hiroshima Carp veteran lefty Ken Takahashi. Takahashi had been weighing a move to the majors pretty much all season, and has now decided to go for it and file for free agency. Here’s a quote from JapanBall:

”It has been a wish of mine to play in America after qualifying for free agency,” said Takahashi, who went 8-5 with Hiroshima this season.

”American baseball is a different world. I’d like to start off by getting one win over there. I’ll need energy to challenge at my age but it is just a case of believing in myself,” the 39-year-old said. ”There aren’t that many left-handers over there either and that would be a plus for me.”

Takahashi enjoyed a resurgent season for the surprisingly competitive Carp, going 8-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 115 2/3 innings. The Carp will certainly miss his presence in the rotation, but team ownership has already promised him a home after he comes back.

BTW, to give credit where credit is due, I laughed out loud at Dirk's comment.
